E-flite Apprentice S (Safe RX) Receiver User Manual

Model: EFLR310013

1. Introduction

The E-flite EFLR310013 Apprentice S (Safe RX) is a sophisticated receiver designed for remote-controlled aircraft, specifically optimized for the Apprentice S model. It incorporates SAFE (Sensor Assisted Flight Envelope) technology, which provides multiple flight modes and a panic recovery function. This technology assists pilots, particularly beginners, in maintaining control and preventing crashes by offering various levels of flight assistance. This manual provides essential information for the proper setup, operation, and maintenance of your receiver to ensure safe and effective use.

2. Setup

2.1. Unboxing and Initial Inspection

Carefully remove the receiver from its packaging. Inspect the receiver and all included components for any signs of damage. Ensure the bind plug is present.

2.2. Mounting the Receiver

Mount the receiver securely within your aircraft using double-sided foam tape or a similar vibration-dampening method. Ensure the receiver is oriented correctly as per your aircraft's instructions, typically with the label facing up and the antenna positioned away from conductive materials.

2.3. Connecting Servos and Components

Connect your aircraft's servos and electronic speed controller (ESC) to the corresponding ports on the receiver. Refer to the labels on the receiver for correct connections:

  • THRO: Throttle (ESC)
  • AILE: Aileron
  • ELEV: Elevator
  • RUDD: Rudder
  • AUX 2: Auxiliary Channel 2 (if applicable)
  • BIND/AUX: Binding Port / Auxiliary Channel (for bind plug or additional channel)

2.4. Binding the Receiver

To establish communication between your transmitter and the receiver, a binding process is required. Follow these general steps:

  1. Ensure your transmitter is off.
  2. Insert the bind plug into the BIND/AUX port on the receiver.
  3. Connect the flight battery to the ESC, powering the receiver. The receiver's LED will typically flash rapidly.
  4. Put your transmitter into bind mode (refer to your transmitter's manual for specific instructions).
  5. The receiver's LED should turn solid, indicating a successful bind.
  6. Disconnect the flight battery from the ESC, then remove the bind plug from the receiver.
  7. Turn off your transmitter, then turn it back on. Reconnect the flight battery to verify the bind.

2.5. SAFE Mode Configuration (DIP Switches)

The receiver features two DIP switches to configure the available SAFE flight modes. Adjust these switches according to your desired flight experience:

DIP Switch 1DIP Switch 2Flight Mode Configuration
OFFOFFDefault (3-Position Switch)
ONOFFBeginner & Experienced
OFFONIntermediate & Experienced
ONONBeginner & Intermediate

2.6. Control Surface Direction Check

After connecting all components and binding, always verify that all control surfaces (ailerons, elevator, rudder) move in the correct direction relative to your transmitter inputs. If a control surface moves in the opposite direction, you may need to reverse the servo direction in your transmitter settings or use a servo reversing cable. For optimal SAFE functionality, ensure your transmitter's travel adjustments for aileron, elevator, and rudder are set to 100% and left there, using dual rates to fine-tune responsiveness if desired.

3. Operating

3.1. SAFE Flight Modes

The SAFE technology offers different flight modes to assist pilots:

  • Beginner Mode: Limits bank and pitch angles, providing self-leveling and reduced control sensitivity. Ideal for first-time pilots.
  • Intermediate Mode: Offers more freedom with increased bank and pitch limits, but still provides self-leveling. Suitable for pilots gaining confidence.
  • Experienced Mode: Provides full control authority with no angle limits or self-leveling. The receiver acts as a standard receiver in this mode.

Switch between these modes using the assigned switch on your transmitter, as configured by the DIP switches.

3.2. Panic Recovery (Bailout Function)

The panic recovery function is a crucial safety feature. When activated (typically by pressing a designated button on your transmitter), the aircraft will immediately return to level flight, regardless of its current orientation. This function works in all flight modes and is designed to help pilots recover from disorientation or loss of control. To use, simply press and hold the panic button until the aircraft levels, then release to resume normal flight.

3.3. Pre-Flight Checks

Before each flight, perform the following checks:

  • Ensure the receiver is securely mounted.
  • Verify all connections are secure.
  • Confirm correct control surface movement and direction.
  • Check battery levels in both the aircraft and transmitter.
  • Ensure the SAFE system is active by advancing the throttle beyond 1/3 and observing self-correction when tilting the aircraft.

4. Maintenance

Proper maintenance ensures the longevity and reliability of your receiver:

  • Keep Clean and Dry: Protect the receiver from dust, dirt, and moisture. Avoid exposing it to extreme temperatures.
  • Inspect Connections: Regularly check all wire connections for looseness or damage. Ensure servo leads are fully seated in their ports.
  • Antenna Care: Do not cut, bend sharply, or modify the receiver antenna. Ensure it is positioned correctly and not obstructed.
  • Vibration Isolation: Ensure the receiver remains properly isolated from aircraft vibrations, which can affect its performance.

5. Troubleshooting

If you encounter issues with your E-flite Apprentice S (Safe RX) receiver, consider the following common problems and solutions:

ProblemPossible CauseSolution
Control surfaces move in the wrong direction.Servo direction reversed in transmitter or physical setup.Reverse the servo direction in your transmitter's settings. If this affects SAFE functionality, consider using a servo reversing cable or physically re-orienting the servo/linkage.
SAFE self-correction not active on the bench.Throttle position too low.The SAFE system typically activates its self-correction functions only when the throttle is above approximately 1/3. Increase throttle to test.
Receiver does not bind to transmitter.Incorrect binding procedure, transmitter not in bind mode, or incompatible transmitter.Review the binding procedure (Section 2.4). Ensure your transmitter is compatible with the receiver and is in bind mode. Try rebinding.
Intermittent control or signal loss.Loose connections, antenna obstruction, or radio interference.Check all wiring and connections. Ensure the antenna is properly positioned and not shielded by carbon fiber or other conductive materials. Fly in an area free from excessive radio interference.
