Operating (How to Play)

Game Objective

The goal of Monopoly is to become the wealthiest player by buying, renting, and selling property. The game ends when only one player remains solvent, and all others have gone bankrupt.

Getting Started

Each player rolls the two standard dice. The player with the highest total goes first. Play proceeds to the left.

Player's Turn

  1. Roll both standard dice and move your token clockwise around the board the number of spaces indicated.
  2. Perform the action corresponding to the space you land on.
  3. If you roll doubles, take your turn as usual, then roll the dice again and take another turn. If you roll doubles three times in a row, you must immediately go to Jail.

Landing on Spaces

  • Unowned Property: You may buy it for the price printed on the board. If you choose not to buy it, the Banker immediately auctions it to the highest bidder.
  • Owned Property: If another player owns the property, you must pay them rent as indicated on their Title Deed card. Rent increases if the property is part of a complete color set, or if houses/hotels are built on it.
  • Chance or Community Chest: Draw the top card from the respective pile and follow its instructions. Return the card to the bottom of the pile after use, unless it's a "Get Out of Jail Free" card.
  • Income Tax / Luxury Tax: Pay the amount indicated to the Bank.
  • Go to Jail: Move your token directly to the "In Jail" space. Do not collect $200 for passing GO.
  • Just Visiting: If you land on "Just Visiting" you are simply visiting and take no action.
  • Free Parking: No action is taken. This is a free resting place.
  • GO: When you pass or land on GO, collect $200 from the Bank.

Buying Property

When you land on an unowned property, you have the option to buy it. If you buy it, you receive the Title Deed card. If you decline, the property is immediately auctioned by the Banker to the highest bidder, including the player who declined it.

Building Houses and Hotels

You can only build houses or hotels on properties if you own all properties in that color group (a "monopoly").

  • Houses must be built evenly across the color group. You cannot build a second house on a property until all properties in that group have one house.
  • The cost of houses and hotels is listed on the Title Deed card.
  • Once you have four houses on each property in a color group, you can upgrade to a hotel by paying the hotel cost and returning the four houses to the Bank.
  • There are a limited number of houses (32) and hotels (12). If the Bank runs out, you cannot build until more become available.

Mortgaging Property

If you need money, you can mortgage properties. All houses and hotels on a property must be sold back to the Bank at half their cost before the property can be mortgaged. The mortgage value is printed on the back of the Title Deed card. No rent can be collected on mortgaged properties. To unmortgage, pay the mortgage value plus 10% interest to the Bank.

Jail

You go to Jail if you:

  • Land on the "Go to Jail" space.
  • Draw a Chance or Community Chest card that instructs you to "Go to Jail".
  • Roll doubles three times in a row.

To get out of Jail, you can:

  • Pay a $50 fine before rolling the dice on either of your next two turns.
  • Use a "Get Out of Jail Free" card.
  • Roll doubles on any of your next three turns. If you succeed, you move out of Jail the number of spaces indicated by the doubles. If you fail to roll doubles on your third turn, you must pay the $50 fine and then move.

While in Jail, you can still buy and sell properties, build houses and hotels, and collect rent.

Speed Die

The Speed Die is an optional component that can be used to shorten game time and add excitement. When using the Speed Die:

  • On your turn, roll all three dice (two standard, one Speed Die).
  • If you roll a number on the Speed Die, add it to the sum of the two standard dice for your total movement.
  • If you roll "Mr. Monopoly" on the Speed Die, move your token the sum of the two standard dice, then move again to the next unowned property or the next property on which you owe rent.
  • If you roll "Bus" on the Speed Die, you can choose to move the sum of the two standard dice, or the sum of all three dice.
  • If you roll doubles on the standard dice, you still get an extra turn. If you roll triples (all three dice show the same number), you can move to any space on the board.

Winning the Game

The game ends when all but one player has gone bankrupt. The remaining player is the winner.

Maintenance

Proper care ensures the longevity of your Monopoly game:

  • Cleaning: Wipe the gameboard and plastic components with a dry, soft cloth. Avoid using abrasive cleaners or liquids.
  • Storage: Store all game components in their original box in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures.
  • Handling: Handle cards and money carefully to prevent bending, tearing, or creasing.
