Setup

1. Battery Installation

  1. Unscrew the microphone body to access the battery compartment.
  2. Insert the provided AA alkaline battery, ensuring correct polarity.
  3. Securely re-screw the microphone body.

2. Mounting the Microphone

The XM-88 offers multiple mounting options:

  • Suspension Shock Mount: Attach the microphone to the suspension shock mount to minimize handling noise and vibrations. This mount can then be attached to a standard mic stand or boom pole.
  • Adjustable Stand Mount: For direct mounting to a mic stand or other compatible equipment.
  • Camera Shoe Adapter: Use this adapter to mount the microphone directly onto a camera's hot shoe for on-camera recording.
  • Cushioned Hand Grip: For handheld operation, providing comfort and reducing minor handling noise.

3. Connecting to Recording Devices

The kit includes various cables and adapters for broad compatibility:

  • XLR to XLR Cables: For connecting to professional audio recorders, mixers, or cameras with XLR inputs. Two lengths are provided (26-inch and 16-inch).
  • XLR to 3.5mm Cable: For connecting to devices with 3.5mm microphone inputs, such as many DSLR/mirrorless cameras or consumer camcorders.
  • 3.5mm to 6.3mm Adapter: To adapt the 3.5mm cable for use with devices requiring a 6.3mm (1/4-inch) input.

4. Wind Protection

Utilize the included wind protection accessories to improve audio quality in outdoor or windy conditions:

  • Foam Wind Shield: Reduces light wind noise and plosives (P and B sounds) for indoor or light outdoor use.
  • Furry Wind Muff (Dead Cat): Provides superior wind noise reduction for outdoor recording in moderate to strong wind conditions.

Operating the Microphone

1. Powering the Microphone

The XM-88 can be powered in two ways:

  • AA Battery: For standalone operation or with devices that do not supply phantom power. Ensure the power switch on the microphone is set to 'ON'.
  • 48V Phantom Power: When connected to professional audio equipment (e.g., mixers, certain cameras) that provide 48V phantom power via an XLR cable, the microphone will draw power automatically. Set the power switch on the microphone to 'OFF' when using phantom power.

2. Audio Pickup Pattern

The VidPro XM-88 features a unidirectional (shotgun) polar pattern, which is highly effective at capturing sound from directly in front of the microphone while significantly reducing sounds from the sides and rear. This characteristic is crucial for isolating desired audio sources and minimizing background noise.

3. Optimal Placement

For best results, position the microphone as close as possible to the sound source, pointing directly at it. When using a boom pole, keep the microphone just out of frame, aimed at the speaker's chest or mouth. Experiment with distance and angle to achieve the desired sound quality and minimize unwanted ambient noise.

Maintenance

Proper maintenance ensures the longevity and performance of your microphone kit:

  • Cleaning: Wipe the microphone body with a soft, dry cloth. Avoid using harsh chemicals or abrasive materials.
  • Wind Protection: The foam wind shield can be gently hand-washed with mild soap and water, then air-dried. The furry wind muff can be shaken out or gently brushed to remove debris.
  • Storage: Always store the microphone and its accessories in the provided foam-padded carrying case when not in use to protect them from dust, moisture, and physical damage.
  • Battery: Remove the AA battery if the microphone will not be used for an extended period to prevent leakage and damage.

Troubleshooting

If you encounter issues with your VidPro XM-88 microphone, refer to the following common problems and solutions:

ProblemPossible CauseSolution
No sound or very low volumeIncorrect power mode, dead battery, loose cable connection, incorrect input settings on recording device.Ensure battery is fresh and installed correctly (if using battery power), or that 48V phantom power is enabled on your device (if using phantom power). Check all cable connections. Verify input levels and settings on your recording device.
Poor sound quality (hiss, static)Low-quality preamps in recording device, interference, improper microphone placement, damaged cable.Use a recording device with high-quality preamps or an external preamp. Ensure cables are fully connected and undamaged. Position microphone optimally to reduce ambient noise. Test with different cables if possible.
Excessive wind noiseNo wind protection or inadequate wind protection for conditions.Use the appropriate wind shield (foam for light wind, furry muff for strong wind).
