4. Setup and Installation

4.1 Attaching the Lens to Your Camera

  1. Prepare the Camera: Ensure your camera is turned off. Remove the body cap from your camera and the rear cap from the lens. Avoid touching the camera's sensor or the lens's rear element.
  2. Align the Mount Marks: Align the red index mark on the lens barrel with the red index mark on your Canon EF mount camera body.
  3. Attach the Lens: Insert the lens into the camera mount and rotate it clockwise until it clicks into place. Do not force the lens.
  4. Attach the Lens Hood: Align the mark on the lens hood with the mark on the front of the lens. Rotate the hood clockwise until it locks securely. The lens hood helps to block extraneous light and protect the front element.

5.3 Aperture Control

The aperture (F-number) is controlled via your camera body. This lens features a bright F1.4 maximum aperture, allowing for excellent performance in low light and the creation of images with a shallow depth of field (bokeh).

6. Maintenance and Care

Proper care will ensure the longevity and performance of your lens.

  • Cleaning the Lens: Use a soft, clean microfiber cloth specifically designed for optical lenses to gently wipe dust and smudges from the lens elements. For stubborn marks, use a small amount of lens cleaning fluid applied to the cloth, not directly to the lens.
  • Cleaning the Lens Body: Use a soft, dry cloth to clean the exterior of the lens. Do not use organic solvents like paint thinner or benzene.
  • Storage: When not in use, attach both the front and rear lens caps and store the lens in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and high humidity. The included lens case provides additional protection.
  • Avoid Extreme Conditions: Do not expose the lens to extreme temperatures, sudden temperature changes, or excessive moisture.
  • Handling: Avoid dropping or subjecting the lens to strong impacts.

7. Troubleshooting

If you encounter issues with your lens, refer to the following common problems and solutions:

  • Lens not attaching to camera: Ensure the red index marks on both the lens and camera body are aligned correctly. Do not force the lens. If it still doesn't attach, check for any obstructions on the mount.
  • Autofocus not working:
    • Check if the AF/MF switch on the lens is set to "AF".
    • Ensure the camera's focus mode is set to autofocus.
    • Verify that the lens and camera contacts are clean.
    • Ensure there is sufficient light and contrast in the scene for the autofocus system to operate effectively.
  • Images are blurry or out of focus:
    • Check if the lens is in MF mode and the focus ring was not adjusted correctly.
    • Ensure the shutter speed is fast enough to prevent camera shake, especially in low light or with moving subjects.
    • Verify that the camera's diopter adjustment is set correctly for your eyesight.
  • Dust inside the lens: A small amount of dust inside a lens is common and rarely affects image quality. If dust significantly impacts images, professional cleaning may be required.

If problems persist, contact Sigma customer support or an authorized service center.
