3. Package Contents

Please verify that all items are present and in good condition upon opening the package:

  • Tycon Systems TP-SCPOE-1248 Controller Unit
  • DIN Rail Mounting Kit
  • Quick Start Guide (or similar documentation)

4. Safety Information

Read all instructions carefully before installation and operation. Failure to do so may result in equipment damage or personal injury.

  • Ensure proper ventilation around the unit.
  • Do not expose the unit to moisture or extreme temperatures.
  • Always disconnect power before making or breaking connections.
  • Use appropriate wiring gauges for all connections to prevent overheating.
  • Observe correct polarity for solar panel and battery connections. Reverse polarity can damage the unit.

5. Setup and Installation

The TP-SCPOE-1248 is designed for easy installation. Follow these steps for proper setup:

5.1 Physical Installation

Mount the controller in a secure, well-ventilated location, away from direct sunlight and moisture. The included DIN Rail Mounting Kit allows for convenient installation on standard DIN rails.

5.2 Connection Diagram

Tycon Systems TP-SCPOE-1248 Controller with connection ports and LED indicators

Figure 1: Front view of the Tycon Systems TP-SCPOE-1248 controller. This image displays the device's front panel, featuring a green terminal block for "SOL" (Solar) and "BAT" (Battery) connections with clearly marked positive and negative terminals. To the right, there are two RJ45 Ethernet ports for PoE input and output, labeled "IN" and "POE OUT". Above the PoE output port, a small fuse holder is visible, marked "FUSE OUT Max 8A". On the far right, a vertical row of five LED indicators is present, labeled "POE", "SOL", "CHA", "LOA", and "REV", providing status feedback. The overall casing is black with ventilation grilles on the sides.

5.3 Wiring Connections

  1. Battery Connection: Connect your 12V battery to the "BAT" terminals on the green terminal block. Ensure correct polarity (+ to + and - to -).
  2. Solar Panel Connection: Connect your solar panel (up to 130W) to the "SOL" terminals on the green terminal block. Observe correct polarity.
  3. PoE Output: Connect your PoE-powered device (e.g., wireless access point, IP camera) to the "POE OUT" RJ45 port. This port provides 48V Passive PoE.
  4. PoE Input (Optional): If auxiliary battery charging is desired from an external PoE source, connect an 18-57V 2A Passive PoE source to the "IN" RJ45 port.
  5. Auxiliary 12V Output: The unit also provides a 12V 1.5A auxiliary output. Refer to the product specifications for connection details if needed.

Note: The PoE Pinout is 4,5V+; 7,8V-, Shielded. Ensure your PoE devices are compatible with this passive PoE standard.

6. Operating Instructions

Once all connections are made, the TP-SCPOE-1248 will automatically begin managing power. Monitor the LED indicators for operational status:

LED Indicator Status
LED Label Description
POE Indicates Power over Ethernet output is active.
SOL Indicates solar panel input is detected and active.
CHA Indicates battery charging is in progress.
LOA Indicates low battery voltage alarm or load disconnect.
REV Indicates reverse polarity connection on solar or battery input. Immediately disconnect power if this LED is lit.

7. Maintenance

The TP-SCPOE-1248 is designed for reliable operation with minimal maintenance. However, periodic checks are recommended:

  • Connections: Periodically inspect all wiring connections to ensure they are secure and free from corrosion.
  • Cleanliness: Keep the unit clean and free of dust and debris to ensure proper heat dissipation. Use a soft, dry cloth for cleaning.
  • Battery Health: Monitor the health of your 12V battery. A failing battery can impact system performance.
  • Fuse Check: If the PoE output is not functioning, check the 8A fuse located near the PoE output port. Replace with a fuse of the same rating if necessary.

8. Troubleshooting

If you encounter issues with your TP-SCPOE-1248, refer to the following common problems and solutions:

Troubleshooting Guide
Problem Possible Cause / Solution
No LEDs are lit.
  • No power input from solar or PoE IN. Check connections.
  • Battery not connected or completely discharged.
REV LED is lit.
  • Reverse polarity on solar panel or battery connection. Disconnect immediately and correct wiring.
CHA LED not lit when solar is active.
  • Battery is fully charged.
  • Insufficient solar input (e.g., low light, panel too small).
  • Faulty solar panel or connection.
No PoE output (POE LED off).
  • Battery voltage too low (LOA LED might be lit).
  • Overload on PoE output. Reduce load.
  • Blown 8A fuse. Replace fuse.
  • Connected PoE device is not compatible with passive 48V PoE.
