  1. Unpacking and Component Identification: Carefully remove all components from the packaging. Verify that all parts listed in the packing list are present. Place the filter tank and pump motor on a stable, level surface near your pool.
  2. Filling the Filter Tank with Sand:
    • Remove the multi-port valve (MPV) from the top of the filter tank.
    • Cover the standpipe opening inside the tank to prevent sand from entering.
    • Slowly add filter sand (not included) into the tank. Refer to specifications for the correct sand type and quantity.
    • Once filled, remove the standpipe cover and clean any sand from the tank's rim.
  3. Attaching the Multi-Port Valve (MPV): Carefully place the MPV onto the top of the filter tank, ensuring the standpipe aligns correctly with the MPV's opening. Secure the MPV with the provided clamp or bolts.

  4. Connecting Hoses:
    • Connect the hose from the pool's return fitting to the "RETURN" port on the MPV.
    • Connect the hose from the pool's skimmer/main drain to the "PUMP" inlet on the pump motor.
    • Connect the hose from the pump's outlet to the "PUMP" port on the MPV.
    • Connect a backwash hose to the "WASTE" port on the MPV, directing it to an appropriate drainage area.

  5. Electrical Connection: Ensure the pump is connected to a grounded electrical outlet protected by a Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter (GFCI). Do not use extension cords.
  6. Priming the Pump: Before starting, ensure the pump is filled with water. Open the air relief valve on the top of the pump's pre-filter basket until water flows out. Close the valve.

4. Operating Instructions

The multi-port valve (MPV) controls the flow of water through the filter system. Always turn off the pump before changing the MPV position.

  • FILTER (Normal Filtration): This is the standard operating position for daily filtration. Water flows through the sand bed, trapping debris, and returns to the pool.
  • BACKWASH (Cleaning Filter): Used to clean the sand filter. Water flows in reverse through the sand bed, dislodging trapped debris, and exits through the waste port. Backwash until the water in the sight glass (if present) runs clear.
  • RINSE (Compacting Sand): Used after backwashing to settle the sand bed and flush out any remaining dirty water from the valve. Run for 30-60 seconds.
  • WASTE (Draining/Vacuuming to Waste): Bypasses the filter and sends water directly out the waste port. Useful for draining the pool or vacuuming heavy debris directly to waste.
  • RECIRCULATE (Bypassing Filter): Circulates water through the pump and back to the pool without passing through the filter sand. Useful for chemical distribution or if the filter is temporarily out of service.
  • CLOSED (Shut Off All Flow): Closes all flow to the filter and pump. Use only when performing maintenance on the pump or filter, and ensure the pump is off.

Operating Schedule

Run the filter pump for at least 8-12 hours per day, depending on pool size, usage, and water quality. Monitor the pressure gauge (if equipped); an increase in pressure indicates the need for backwashing.

5. Maintenance

Regular maintenance ensures optimal performance and longevity of your sand filter pump.

  • Routine Cleaning:
    • Pre-filter Basket: Regularly check and clean the pre-filter basket (strainer pot) to remove large debris. Turn off the pump, close valves, unscrew the clear lid, remove the basket, and rinse it.
    • Backwashing: Perform backwashing when the pressure gauge reading is 5-10 PSI above its clean operating pressure, or when water clarity decreases.
  • Sand Replacement: Filter sand typically needs to be replaced every 3-5 years, depending on usage and water quality. Refer to the "Setup" section for instructions on filling the tank.
  • Winterization: Before freezing temperatures, drain all water from the pump, filter tank, and hoses. Store the pump and MPV in a dry, protected area. Remove the sand from the tank or ensure it is completely dry.

6. Troubleshooting

Refer to the table below for common issues and their solutions.
