3. Preparation and Setup

Proper surface preparation is critical for optimal adhesion and durability of the VHT Engine Enamel. Follow these steps carefully:

  1. Clean the Surface: Ensure the surface to be painted is free of all dirt, grease, oil, wax, rust, and loose paint. Use a suitable degreaser or wax and grease remover.
  2. Sand (if necessary): For best adhesion, lightly sand smooth or glossy surfaces with fine-grit sandpaper (e.g., 320-400 grit) to create a profile. Wipe away sanding dust with a tack cloth.
  3. Prime (Recommended): For maximum protection and color uniformity, apply VHT Engine Enamel Primer (e.g., VHT SP148 Light Gray Primer) before applying the color coat. Follow the primer's instructions for application and dry times.
  4. Masking: Mask off any areas not intended for painting to prevent overspray.
  5. Environmental Conditions: Apply in a well-ventilated area when temperatures are between 60°F (16°C) and 95°F (35°C) and humidity is below 60%. Avoid painting in direct sunlight or on hot surfaces.
  6. Shake Can: Shake the aerosol can vigorously for at least one minute after the mixing ball begins to rattle. Continue to shake occasionally during application.

4. Application Instructions

Follow these steps for effective application of VHT 550° Engine Enamel:

  1. Test Spray: Before applying to the actual surface, test spray on a scrap piece of material to check color match and spray pattern.
  2. Application Distance: Hold the can approximately 10-12 inches (25-30 cm) from the surface.
  3. Apply Thin Coats: Apply the paint in several thin, even coats using a steady, sweeping motion. Avoid applying thick coats, which can lead to runs or drips.
  4. Recoat Time: Allow 10 minutes between coats. Apply 2-3 light coats for best results.
  5. Clear Coat (Optional): For enhanced gloss and protection, a VHT Engine Enamel Clear Coat can be applied after the color coat has dried according to its instructions.
  6. Clean Valve: After each use, invert the can and spray for a few seconds until only clear propellant comes out. This prevents the nozzle from clogging.

5. Curing Process

VHT Engine Enamel requires proper curing to achieve its maximum hardness, durability, and heat resistance. The paint will dry to the touch in 1 hour and thoroughly overnight. However, its unique qualities are fully realized only after correct curing.

Curing can be achieved through two methods:

  • Normal Engine Operating Temperatures: The heat generated by the engine during normal operation will cure the paint over time.
  • Baking (Recommended for optimal results): For parts that can be removed, bake at 200°F (93°C) for 20 minutes. This method ensures a complete and uniform cure.

Note: Ensure the painted surface is completely dry to the touch before initiating the curing process.

6. Maintenance

Once fully cured, VHT Engine Enamel provides a durable finish. To maintain its appearance and protective qualities:

  • Clean painted surfaces with mild automotive cleaners. Avoid harsh abrasives or strong solvents that could damage the finish.
  • Regularly inspect painted components for any signs of damage or wear, especially in high-stress or high-heat areas.
  • Touch up small chips or scratches promptly to prevent rust or corrosion from spreading.

7. Troubleshooting

ProblemPossible CauseSolution
Runs or SagsToo much paint applied in one coat; can held too close to surface.Apply thinner, even coats. Hold can 10-12 inches away. Allow proper dry time between coats.
Poor AdhesionImproper surface preparation (grease, dirt, rust); surface too smooth.Ensure surface is thoroughly cleaned and degreased. Lightly sand smooth surfaces. Use VHT primer.
Uneven Finish / MottlingInadequate shaking of can; inconsistent spray pattern; environmental conditions.Shake can vigorously before and during use. Apply in consistent, sweeping motions. Ensure proper temperature and humidity.
Nozzle CloggingPaint dried in nozzle after use. After each use, invert can and spray until clear propellant appears. Clean nozzle with a pin if clogged.
