2. Safety Information

WARNING: Risk of Electric Shock. Improper installation can result in serious injury or death.

  • Always turn off power at the circuit breaker or fuse box before installing or servicing the timer.
  • This device must be installed by a qualified electrician or trained personnel in accordance with all national and local electrical codes.
  • Do not use this timer with loads exceeding the specified ratings (Resistive: 10A, Tungsten: 6A, Motor: 2HP, Ballasted: 4A).
  • Ensure all wire connections are secure and properly insulated.
  • This product is for indoor use only. Do not expose to moisture or extreme temperatures.

3. Installation Instructions

The TMDW40 is designed for wire-in installation, replacing a standard wall switch. Ensure power is OFF before proceeding.

  1. Turn Off Power: Locate the circuit breaker or fuse that controls the switch you are replacing and turn it OFF. Verify power is off using a voltage tester.
  2. Remove Existing Switch: Carefully remove the wall plate and unscrew the existing switch from the wall box. Disconnect the wires from the old switch, noting their connections.
  3. Wire the TMDW40: Connect the wires from the wall box to the TMDW40 timer according to the wiring diagram provided with the product. Typically, this involves Line (hot), Load, and Ground wires. For 208-277V applications, ensure proper phase connections.
  4. Mount the Timer: Secure the TMDW40 timer into the wall box using the provided screws. Ensure it is flush with the wall.
  5. Install Wall Plate: Attach the new or existing wall plate over the timer.
  6. Restore Power: Turn the power back ON at the circuit breaker or fuse box.

If you are unsure about any step, consult a qualified electrician.

4. Initial Setup and Programming

After installation and restoring power, the timer's display will activate. You will need to set the current time and day, then program your desired ON/OFF schedules.

4.1 Setting Current Time and Day

Refer to the specific buttons on your TMDW40 unit (e.g., 'SET', 'HOUR', 'MIN', 'DAY') to adjust the current time and day. The exact sequence may vary slightly, but generally involves:

  1. Pressing a 'SET' or 'CLOCK' button to enter time setting mode.
  2. Using 'HOUR' and 'MIN' buttons to adjust the time.
  3. Using a 'DAY' button to select the current day of the week.
  4. Confirming settings, often by pressing 'SET' again or waiting for the display to revert.

4.2 Programming ON/OFF Schedules

The TMDW40 allows for up to 7 distinct ON/OFF programs. Each program can be set for specific days of the week or for daily repetition.

  1. Enter Program Mode: Press the 'PROG' or 'TIMER' button to access the programming menu. You will typically see 'PROG 1 ON' or similar.
  2. Set ON Time: Use 'HOUR' and 'MIN' buttons to set the desired ON time for Program 1.
  3. Select Days: Use the 'DAY' button to cycle through day options (e.g., Mon-Sun, Mon-Fri, Sat-Sun, individual days). Select the days for which this ON time applies.
  4. Set OFF Time: Press 'PROG' again to advance to 'PROG 1 OFF'. Set the desired OFF time using 'HOUR' and 'MIN' buttons, and select the corresponding days.
  5. Repeat for Additional Programs: Continue pressing 'PROG' to set up to 7 ON/OFF programs as needed.
  6. Exit Program Mode: Press the 'CLOCK' or 'RUN' button to exit programming and return to normal operation.

5. Operating Instructions

5.1 Manual Override

The TMDW40 typically includes a manual override function, allowing you to temporarily switch the connected load ON or OFF without affecting the programmed schedule. Look for a button labeled 'MANUAL', 'ON/OFF', or 'OVERRIDE'. Pressing this button will toggle the load's state. The timer will resume its programmed schedule at the next scheduled event.

5.2 Mode Selection

Some timers offer different operating modes (e.g., AUTO, MANUAL, RANDOM). Use the 'MODE' button (if present) to select the desired operation. 'AUTO' mode will follow the programmed schedule. 'MANUAL' mode keeps the load in its current state until manually changed. 'RANDOM' mode (if available) can provide a security feature by varying ON/OFF times slightly.

6. Maintenance

The Westek TMDW40 is designed for minimal maintenance. Keep the unit clean by wiping it with a soft, dry cloth. Avoid using abrasive cleaners or solvents. The internal battery backup is typically not user-replaceable and is designed for the lifespan of the product. If the display consistently loses settings during brief power interruptions, the internal battery may need professional servicing or replacement of the unit.

7. Troubleshooting

  • Timer does not turn ON/OFF at programmed times:
    • Ensure the timer is in 'AUTO' mode.
    • Verify that the current time and day are set correctly.
    • Check that the ON and OFF programs are correctly entered and assigned to the desired days.
    • Confirm that the connected load is within the timer's specifications.
  • Display is blank or not responding:
    • Check the circuit breaker to ensure power is supplied to the timer.
    • Ensure all wiring connections are secure.
    • If recently installed, re-check wiring against the diagram.
  • Timer randomly resets or loses settings:
    • This indicates an issue with the internal battery backup. While designed to retain settings during power outages, a failing battery may cause loss of memory.
    • Ensure stable power supply to the unit. Frequent power fluctuations can sometimes affect electronics.
    • If the problem persists, the unit may require replacement.
  • Load does not turn ON/OFF manually:
    • Verify the manual override button is functioning.
    • Check the connected load (e.g., light bulb, motor) to ensure it is operational.
