- 6x Carriage Bolts (M6 x 90mm)
- 2x Backing Plates
- Installation Instructions (refer to this manual)
3. Installation Instructions
Proper installation is critical for the security performance of the hasp. Ensure you have access to both sides of the mounting surface (e.g., door and door frame, shed wall) for secure bolt-through installation.
Required Tools:
- Drill
- Drill bits (slightly larger than M6 for clearance)
- Wrench or socket set (for M6 nuts/bolts)
- Measuring tape or ruler
- Pencil or marker
- Safety glasses
- Gloves
Installation Steps:
- Positioning: Determine the optimal placement for the hasp on your door/gate and frame. Ensure the hasp aligns correctly when closed and allows for a padlock to be inserted.
- Marking Holes: With the hasp in the desired closed position, mark the drilling points for both the staple (the part with the padlock eye) and the hinged plate.
- Drilling Holes:
- For the staple (padlock eye piece): Drill four holes through the mounting surface. Use a drill bit slightly larger than 6mm to allow for minor alignment adjustments. The carriage bolts will be inserted from the outside.
- For the hinged plate: Drill two holes through the mounting surface. These bolts will be inserted from the inside.
- Preparing Bolts for Hinged Plate: Before installing the hinged plate, thread a nut onto each of the two hexagon-head bolts, positioning it near the head of the bolt. This nut will be used to secure the hasp plate to the backing plate.
- Installing the Hinged Plate:
- From the inside of the structure, push the two hexagon-head bolts through the backing plate and then through the drilled holes in the wall.
- Align the hinged hasp plate on the outside and screw it onto the protruding bolts. Tighten the bolts into the hinge plate.
- From the inside, screw the pre-positioned nuts up to the backing plate and tighten them securely against the backing plate and the wall. The distance the nuts need to move will depend on the thickness of your mounting surface.
- Installing the Staple:
- From the outside, insert the four carriage bolts through the staple and then through the drilled holes in the mounting surface.
- On the inside, place the backing plate over the protruding bolts and secure with nuts. Tighten all nuts firmly.
- Testing: Close the hasp and ensure it aligns properly. Insert your padlock to verify functionality.
Note: The provided M6 x 90mm bolts may be longer than required for some applications. If necessary, shorter M6-1.0 bolts can be sourced, or the provided bolts can be cut to length. Ensure all bolts are tightened securely to prevent removal.
4. Operating the Hasp
The ABUS 125/150 C Hasp is designed to be used in conjunction with a padlock (sold separately). The security rating of the padlock should match or exceed the security of the hasp for optimal protection.
- To Secure: Close the hinged plate over the staple. Insert the shackle of a compatible padlock through the eye of the staple and engage the locking mechanism of the padlock.
- To Unsecure: Unlock and remove the padlock. Pivot the hinged plate away from the staple.
Ensure the padlock shackle fits snugly within the hasp's eye to minimize leverage points for potential attacks.
5. Maintenance
The ABUS 125/150 C Hasp is constructed from hardened steel with corrosion protection, requiring minimal maintenance.
- Cleaning: Periodically wipe the hasp with a damp cloth to remove dirt and debris. Avoid abrasive cleaners.
- Lubrication: While not strictly necessary for the hasp itself, lubricating the padlock mechanism regularly is recommended, especially in outdoor or harsh environments.
- Inspection: Regularly inspect the hasp and its mounting for any signs of wear, damage, or loosening of bolts. Tighten any loose fasteners immediately.
6. Troubleshooting
Issue: Hasp does not align properly when closing.
- Solution: Recheck the initial marking and drilling of holes. Slight adjustments may be needed. Ensure the mounting surface is flat and even.
- Solution: Verify that the hinged plate and staple are mounted at the same height and distance from the edge of the door/frame.
Issue: Bolts are too long for the mounting surface.
- Solution: Source shorter M6-1.0 bolts from a hardware store.
- Solution: Carefully cut the provided bolts to the required length using appropriate tools. Ensure clean threads for nuts.
Issue: Difficulty tightening nuts on bolts.
- Solution: Ensure drill holes are sufficiently wide to allow for slight bolt movement and alignment.
- Solution: Use a wrench or socket that provides good grip and leverage.
