4. Setup and Installation
4.1. Battery Installation
The cycle computer and speed transmitter typically come with batteries pre-installed. If not, or if replacement is needed:
- Open the battery compartment cover on the back of the computer unit and the transmitter using a coin or small screwdriver.
- Insert a new CR2032 battery with the positive (+) side facing up.
- Securely close the battery compartment cover.
Note: When replacing batteries, some stored values like total distance may be reset. It is advisable to record these values beforehand.
4.2. Mounting the Computer Unit
The computer unit can be mounted on the handlebar or stem.
- Place the handlebar mount on your desired location.
- Secure the mount using the provided O-rings or cable ties. Ensure it is firmly attached and does not rotate.
- Slide the BC 12.12 STS computer unit onto the mount until it clicks into place.
4.3. Installing the Speed Transmitter and Magnet
The speed transmitter is installed on the bicycle fork, and the magnet on a spoke.
- Attach the speed transmitter to the front fork using the provided mounting material. Position it so that the sensor tip is aligned with the spoke magnet's path.
- Attach the spoke magnet to a spoke on the front wheel.
- Adjust the position of both the transmitter and the magnet so that the distance between them is no more than 12mm when the magnet passes the sensor. For optimal performance, aim for a few millimeters.
- Ensure the magnet's orientation is correct as indicated in the transmitter's instructions.
Tip: Using cable ties instead of O-rings can provide a more secure attachment for both the mount and the transmitter.
4.4. Initial Configuration
After installation, you need to configure the computer for accurate readings.
- Language Selection: Power on the device. The first setting will typically be language. Use the buttons to select your preferred language (e.g., English).
- Unit Selection: Choose between kilometers per hour (km/h) or miles per hour (mph). Note that selecting mph may automatically set temperature to Fahrenheit, while kph may set it to Celsius.
- Wheel Size (Tire Circumference): This is crucial for accurate speed and distance measurements. Refer to the table below or measure your wheel's circumference precisely.
| Tire Size | Circumference (mm) |
|---|---|
| 26 inch (559) | 2070 - 2120 |
| 27.5 inch (584) | 2160 - 2210 |
| 28 inch / 700C (622) | 2100 - 2250 |
| 29 inch (622) | 2280 - 2350 |
To measure precisely: Mark a point on your tire and the ground. Roll the bike one full revolution in a straight line and mark the new point on the ground. Measure the distance between the two marks.
- Time Setting: Set the current time.
5. Operating Instructions
5.1. Button Functions
The BC 12.12 STS typically has two main buttons for operation:
- MODE Button: Used to cycle through different display functions (e.g., speed, distance, time).
- SET/RESET Button: Used to enter settings menus, confirm selections, or reset values. A long press often initiates a reset.
5.2. Display Functions
The computer displays various data points. Use the MODE button to navigate through them:
- Current Speed: Your real-time cycling speed.
- Average Speed: The average speed for your current trip.
- Maximum Speed: The highest speed recorded during your current trip.
- Trip Distance: The distance covered during your current trip. This value needs to be manually reset for each new trip.
- Total Distance: The accumulated distance over the lifetime of the computer. This value is generally retained even after battery changes if the backup function is active.
- Trip Time: The duration of your current ride.
- Total Ride Time: The accumulated ride time over the lifetime of the computer.
- Clock: Displays the current time.
- Temperature: Displays the ambient temperature. Note that temperature readings may take time to adjust to rapid changes.
- Fuel Saving: Calculates the amount of fuel saved based on the distance cycled.
5.3. Resetting Trip Data
To reset trip-specific data (Trip Distance, Trip Time, Average Speed, Max Speed) for a new ride:
- Navigate to any trip-related display (e.g., Trip Distance).
- Press and hold the SET/RESET button. The displayed value will reset. Continue holding the button to reset other associated trip data simultaneously.
Note: Total Distance and Total Ride Time are not reset by this action.
6. Maintenance
- Cleaning: Clean the computer unit and transmitter with a soft, damp cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners or solvents.
- Battery Replacement: Replace batteries (CR2032) when the low battery indicator appears. Ensure proper polarity.
- Storage: If storing the computer for an extended period, it is recommended to remove the batteries to prevent leakage. Store in a cool, dry place.
- Watertightness: The device is watertight, but avoid submerging it in water or exposing it to high-pressure water jets.
