4.2 Choosing a Location

Follow these guidelines for optimal placement:

• Install at least one smoke detector on every floor of your home, including the basement.
• Place a detector inside every bedroom and in the hallway outside each sleeping area.
• Mount on the ceiling or high on a wall (at least 10-30 cm from the ceiling/wall intersection).
• Avoid dead air spaces, such as at the peak of a vaulted ceiling or in corners.
• Keep detectors at least 1 meter (3 feet) away from heating and cooling vents, fluorescent lights, and cooking appliances.

4.3 Mounting the Detector

1. Select a suitable mounting location.
2. Use the mounting base plate as a template to mark the screw holes on the ceiling or wall.
3. Drill pilot holes if necessary and insert the wall plugs (if applicable).
4. Attach the mounting base plate securely using the provided screws.
5. Align the smoke detector with the mounting base plate and twist clockwise until it clicks into place. This action activates the sealed battery.

5. Operating Instructions

5.1 Testing the Alarm

It is crucial to test your smoke detector weekly to ensure proper operation.

1. Press and hold the large central Test/Hush button.
2. The alarm will sound. For the first 4 seconds, the sound level will be reduced to protect your hearing. After 4 seconds, the alarm will sound at its full 85 dB volume.
3. Release the button. The alarm should stop.

If the alarm does not sound during testing, refer to the Troubleshooting section.

5.2 Hush Feature (Nuisance Alarm Silencing)

The Hush feature allows you to temporarily silence the alarm for approximately 10 minutes in case of a nuisance alarm (e.g., from cooking fumes).

1. Press the large central Test/Hush button briefly.
2. The alarm will silence, and the red LED will flash every 10 seconds to indicate it is in Hush mode.
3. After approximately 10 minutes, the alarm will automatically reset. If smoke is still present, the alarm will sound again.

Note: Do not use the Hush feature for actual fire conditions. Evacuate the premises immediately if you suspect a real fire.

5.3 Low Battery Warning

The Kidde 10Y29 features an early silent low battery warning system:

• Initially, a red LED will flash every 60 seconds to indicate the battery is starting to run low. This silent warning period lasts for 30 days.
• After 30 days, the alarm will begin to chirp every 30 seconds, in addition to the flashing LED, to indicate that the battery is nearing its end of life and the unit needs to be replaced.

This silent warning feature is particularly useful during nighttime hours when lower ambient temperatures can reduce battery voltage, preventing disruptive chirps.

6.1 Cleaning Your Smoke Detector

Regular cleaning helps maintain the detector's sensitivity and prevents nuisance alarms.

1. Monthly: Gently vacuum around the alarm's cover and vents using a soft brush attachment. This helps remove dust and debris from the insect screen.
2. Annually: For a more thorough cleaning, you may carefully wipe the exterior with a damp cloth. Do not use cleaning solvents or spray directly into the unit.

Important: Do not paint the smoke detector. Paint can clog the openings and interfere with the sensor's ability to detect smoke.
