2. Setup and Installation

The Hardwired GPS Device is a self-supporting tracking unit that requires constant power and ground to operate. It contains two antennas: one for GPS data and the other for LTE communication. You can easily install this unit under the dash of the vehicle for concealment.

Mounting the Unit:

To mount the unit, ensure the label side is facing down to optimize antenna reception. Avoid placing the unit below metal objects as metal can interfere with internal antennas. Plastic, glass, and other materials do not cause significant interference. The area underneath the dashboard is a preferred location, though other locations may work.

NOTE: Use a Digital Multi-meter for probing electrical systems to prevent damage. Disconnect positive and negative terminals from the battery before wiring to ensure deactivation of airbags and other critical components.

3-Wire Installation:

This is a simple 3-Wire installation guide suitable for individuals with experience in wiring stereos, car alarms, or similar components. If you are not comfortable with electrical work, professional installation is recommended.

Ground Connection:

Connect wire #7 (black wire) to a grounding source. Ensure this is connected to a solid chassis ground, free of plastics and paint. Do not use floating grounds from the vehicle's electrical system. Secure with a bolt or screw.

12-Volt/DC Power Connection:

Connect wire #3 (red wire) to a constant 12-volt source from the vehicle. It is important that this source always maintains 12 volts and does not shut off with the ignition power.

Ignition Switch Connection:

Connect wire #4 (white wire) to a switched 12-volt source wire from the vehicle. This connection is used to monitor the ignition on/off status. It's important to make sure that the switched 12-volt source you have chosen drops to (0) zero when the ignition is in the "off" position and returns to 12-volts with the switch in the "on" position.

Remaining Harness Wires:

Using wire cutters, trim any remaining wires on the harness that are not needed to a manageable length. Secure any exposed wire ends with electrical tape or wire nuts to prevent short circuits.

Powering Up the Unit:

After attaching the wires and mounting the unit, reconnect the battery terminals and power up the unit by connecting the harness. The LED status indicators will illuminate. It may take up to five minutes to lock in a GPS signal. If a GPS signal is not obtained, reposition the unit and try again.

3. Operation

The Spy Spot GPS Vehicle Tracker provides comprehensive monitoring and control through its dedicated mobile application and web portal. Ensure your device is activated and connected to a subscription plan for full functionality.

Accessing the Tracking Portal:

You can access your vehicle's tracking data via the Spy Spot mobile app or the web portal. The mobile app is available for download on both the Apple App Store and Google Play Store.

Remote Ignition Disable:

The kill switch relay allows you to remotely disable the vehicle's ignition. This feature can be activated from the mobile app or web portal. Once activated, the vehicle will not be able to start until the ignition is re-enabled through the system.

Important: The kill switch will prevent the engine from starting. If the vehicle is already running, it will not immediately shut off the engine. The engine will be disabled the next time it is turned off and an attempt is made to restart it.

4. Maintenance

The Spy Spot GPS Vehicle Tracker is designed for low maintenance. Regular checks are recommended to ensure optimal performance:

  • Wiring Integrity: Periodically inspect the wiring connections to ensure they remain secure and free from corrosion or damage.
  • Software Updates: Ensure your mobile application and web portal are updated to the latest versions to benefit from new features and security enhancements.
  • Subscription Status: Verify your subscription plan is active to maintain continuous tracking and remote functionality.
  • Unit Placement: Avoid relocating the unit frequently, as this may require re-calibration for GPS signal acquisition.

Common Issues and Solutions:

  • Remote Kill Switch Not Working:
    • Verify the wiring connections, especially the ignition sense wire (#4 white) and the relay connections, are correct and secure.
    • Ensure the device has good cellular coverage (Green LED flashing 1 sec on, 15 sec off).
    • Confirm your subscription plan is active and supports the kill switch feature.
    • Check the optional relay bypass toggle switch (if installed) is in the "ON" position for normal operation.
  • Inaccurate GPS Location or No Signal:
    • Ensure the unit is mounted with the label side facing down for optimal antenna reception.
    • Relocate the unit if it's placed under heavy metal objects or in an area with poor satellite visibility.
    • Check the Red LED status; if it's fast flashing, the device is searching for GPS. If OFF, GPS is asleep.
  • No Data Updates or Connectivity Issues:
    • Verify the 12-volt constant power connection (#3 red wire) is stable and not losing power.
    • Check the Green LED status for cellular coverage. If it's flashing 1 sec on, 1 sec off, there is no cellular coverage.
    • Ensure your subscription plan is active and has not expired.
