Setup Instructions
Follow these steps to set up your ZyXEL WRE2205 Range Extender:
1. Powering On the Device
Plug the WRE2205 directly into a standard power outlet. Ensure the power switch, if present, is in the 'ON' position. The device will begin to power up.

Figure 2: Back view of the ZyXEL WRE2205 Range Extender, illustrating the integrated power plug for direct wall outlet connection.
2. Optimal Placement
The WRE2205 features an LED signal strength indicator. Install the extender at a location where this LED indicates a strong wireless signal from your main router. This ensures effective extension of your network. Avoid placing the extender too far from your main router or in areas with significant obstructions like thick walls or large metal objects.
3. Connecting to Your Existing Network (WPS Method)
- Press the WPS button on your main wireless router.
- Within two minutes, press the WPS button on the ZyXEL WRE2205 Range Extender.
- The WPS LED on both devices should blink and then turn solid, indicating a successful connection.
If the WPS connection fails, proceed to the manual setup method.
4. Connecting to Your Existing Network (Manual Method)
- Connect a computer or mobile device to the WRE2205's default Wi-Fi network (SSID and password can typically be found on a label on the device or in the Quick Start Guide).
- Open a web browser and enter the default IP address or hostname for the WRE2205 (e.g., http://zyxelsetup or http://192.168.1.1). Refer to the Quick Start Guide for the exact address.
- Follow the on-screen setup wizard to scan for available wireless networks.
- Select your existing wireless network (SSID) and enter its password.
- Configure the extended network's SSID and password. It is recommended to use a different SSID to distinguish it from your main network.
- Save the settings. The WRE2205 will restart and connect to your main network.
5. Connecting Wired Devices
The WRE2205 includes an Ethernet port. You can connect a wired device, such as a desktop computer, gaming console, or smart TV, to this port using an Ethernet cable to provide it with network access via the extended wireless network.
Operating Instructions
Once the ZyXEL WRE2205 Range Extender is successfully set up, it will automatically extend your wireless network. Devices within the extended range can connect to the new network SSID you configured during setup.
Connecting Wireless Devices
On your wireless devices (smartphones, tablets, laptops), scan for available Wi-Fi networks. Select the SSID of the extended network (e.g., "YourNetwork_EXT") and enter the password you set during the manual setup process. Your device will then connect to the extended network.
Understanding LED Indicators
The LED indicators on the WRE2205 provide information about its status and the strength of the signal from your main router. Refer to the Quick Start Guide for a detailed explanation of each LED's behavior (e.g., solid green for good signal, blinking for weak signal, off for no connection).
Using the Ethernet Port
The Ethernet port on the WRE2205 allows you to connect one wired device to your network. This is useful for devices that do not have Wi-Fi capabilities or for achieving a more stable connection for bandwidth-intensive tasks.
Maintenance
To ensure optimal performance and longevity of your ZyXEL WRE2205 Range Extender, consider the following maintenance tips:
- Cleaning: Gently wipe the device with a soft, dry cloth. Do not use liquid cleaners or aerosols.
- Placement: Ensure the device is placed in a well-ventilated area, away from direct sunlight, heat sources, and moisture.
- Firmware Updates: Periodically check the ZyXEL support website for firmware updates. Keeping your device's firmware up-to-date can improve performance, stability, and security.
- Power Cycle: If you experience intermittent issues, try unplugging the device from the power outlet for 10 seconds and then plugging it back in. This can resolve minor connectivity problems.
Troubleshooting
If you encounter issues with your ZyXEL WRE2205 Range Extender, refer to the following common problems and solutions:
No Internet Access or Weak Signal
- Check Power: Ensure the WRE2205 is properly plugged into a working power outlet and the power switch is on.
- Relocate Extender: The signal strength LED is crucial for optimal placement. If the LED indicates a weak signal, move the extender closer to your main router. Avoid areas with physical obstructions.
- Verify Main Router: Ensure your main wireless router is functioning correctly and providing internet access.
- Re-establish Connection: Try re-running the WPS setup or the manual setup wizard to ensure the extender is correctly connected to your main network.
WPS Setup Fails
- Timing: Ensure you press the WPS button on both the router and the extender within the specified time frame (usually 2 minutes).
- Router Compatibility: Some routers may have WPS issues. If repeated attempts fail, use the manual setup method via a web browser.
Cannot Access Setup Page
- Correct IP/Hostname: Verify you are using the correct default IP address or hostname (e.g., http://zyxelsetup) as specified in the Quick Start Guide.
- Network Connection: Ensure your device is connected to the WRE2205's Wi-Fi network (or via Ethernet) before attempting to access the setup page.
- IP Conflict: If the extender has obtained an IP address from your main router's DHCP server, its default access address might change. Try checking your router's connected devices list for the extender's assigned IP.
Slow Connection Speed
- Placement: The extender might be too far from the main router or too far from your client devices. Experiment with different locations.
- Interference: Other electronic devices (cordless phones, microwaves, Bluetooth devices) can cause interference. Try to minimize these.
- Network Congestion: Too many devices on the network or high bandwidth usage can slow down speeds.
Factory Reset
If all troubleshooting steps fail, you may perform a factory reset. Locate the reset button (often a small pinhole) on the device. With the device powered on, use a paperclip to press and hold the reset button for 5-10 seconds until the LEDs flash. The device will revert to its factory default settings, and you will need to set it up again.
