Belimo AFBUP Damper Actuator Instruction Manual

Model: AFBUP

1. Introduction and Overview

This manual provides detailed instructions for the installation, operation, and maintenance of the Belimo AFBUP Damper Actuator. The AFBUP series actuators are designed for reliable fail-safe operation in HVAC systems, ensuring positive close-off on air-tight dampers.

Key features include:

  • Spring return mechanism for fail-safe control.
  • Designed for on/off control of dampers in HVAC systems.
  • Operates on 24 to 240 VAC power supply.
  • Provides 95° of rotation with a graduated position indicator.
  • Can be stalled at any point in its normal rotation without mechanical end switches.
  • Shipped at +5° from full fail-safe for automatic compression against damper gaskets.

2. Safety Information

Please read these instructions carefully before installing, operating, or servicing the Belimo AFBUP Damper Actuator. Failure to follow these instructions may result in property damage, injury, or death.

  • Installation and wiring must be performed by qualified personnel in accordance with all local and national electrical codes.
  • Disconnect power before installation or servicing to prevent electrical shock.
  • Ensure the actuator is securely mounted to the damper shaft.
  • Do not operate the actuator beyond its specified voltage range (24 to 240 VAC).
  • Protect the actuator from moisture and extreme temperatures.

3. Product Components

The Belimo AFBUP Damper Actuator package typically includes the following components:

  • 1/2" Conduit Connector

4. Installation

  1. Pre-Installation Check: Ensure the damper shaft is clean and free of obstructions. Verify that the actuator's torque rating matches the damper requirements.
  2. Mounting the Actuator:
    • Position the actuator on the damper shaft.
    • Secure the actuator using the provided mounting bracket and hardware. Ensure a firm, stable connection to prevent slippage.
    • The actuator can be mounted in any position relative to the damper shaft.
  3. Wiring:
    • Disconnect all power to the circuit before wiring.
    • Connect the actuator's electrical cable to the power supply (24 to 240 VAC) according to local electrical codes and the wiring diagram provided with the product.
    • Utilize the 1/2" conduit connector for secure and compliant wiring.
    • Ensure all connections are tight and insulated.
  4. Functional Test: After installation and wiring, restore power and perform a functional test to ensure the actuator operates correctly and the damper moves through its full range of motion.

5. Operating Instructions

The Belimo AFBUP is an on/off, spring return actuator. Its operation is straightforward:

  • Power On: When power (24 to 240 VAC) is applied to the actuator, it will drive the damper to its open or closed position, depending on the wiring configuration.
  • Power Off (Fail-Safe): Upon loss of power, the internal spring mechanism will automatically return the damper to its pre-set fail-safe position (typically fully open or fully closed). This ensures critical system response during power outages.
  • Position Indication: The graduated position indicator on the actuator provides a visual reference of the damper's current position, ranging from 0° to 95°.
  • Manual Override (if applicable): If equipped with a manual override, refer to specific product documentation for instructions on disengaging the motor and manually positioning the damper.

6. Maintenance

The Belimo AFBUP Damper Actuator is designed for long-term, maintenance-free operation. However, periodic checks are recommended to ensure optimal performance:

  • Visual Inspection: Annually inspect the actuator for any signs of physical damage, loose connections, or corrosion.
  • Wiring Integrity: Check electrical connections for tightness and ensure insulation is intact.
  • Damper Operation: Verify that the damper moves freely and fully without binding. Ensure the actuator's rotation matches the damper's range.
  • Cleaning: Keep the exterior of the actuator clean and free of dust or debris. Do not use abrasive cleaners or solvents.

7. Troubleshooting
