Lutron Diva DVELV-303P-AL Electronic Low Voltage Dimmer Instruction Manual

Model: DVELV-303P-AL

Introduction

The Lutron Diva Electronic Low Voltage (ELV) Dimmer is designed for precise control of 300-Watt electronic low-voltage lighting applications, including single-pole or 3-way setups. It features a paddle-style switch for on/off control and a small slide control for adjusting light levels. The dimmer includes a soft locator light for visibility in the dark.

Key Features

  • Not for use with LED; works with 300W incandescent or 120W halogen.
  • For use in 3-way 300-Watt electronic Low-Voltage applications.
  • Paddle switch turns light off and on to a preset level; small sliding dimmer switch provides precise lighting control.
  • Matches many existing decorator-style switches.
  • Soft locator light in off-position for easy finding in the dark.
  • Neutral wire required.
  • Wall plate not included.

Setup and Installation

Important Safety Information: Before beginning any electrical work, ensure the power is turned OFF at the circuit breaker to prevent electrical shock. Confirm the power is off by testing the existing switch.

Tools Required: Phillips head screwdriver, pliers.

Neutral Wire: A neutral wire is required for this dimmer. Most homes built from the mid-1980s onward have neutral wires (typically white) in each wall box. If your wall box does not have a neutral wire, consult a qualified electrician.

Installation Steps:

  1. Turn Off Power: Locate your circuit breaker and turn off the power to the switch you intend to replace. Verify the power is off by attempting to operate the existing light switch.
  2. Remove Existing Switch: Carefully remove the wall plate and then unscrew the existing switch from the wall box.
  3. Identify Wires: Note the wiring configuration of your existing switch.
  4. Ground Wire Connection: Connect the ground wire from your wall box to the green wire on the new Lutron Diva dimmer using a wire cap. If no ground wire is present in the wall box, cap off the green wire on the dimmer.
  5. Single-Pole Wiring (1 Black, 1 Yellow, 1 White Wire):

    • Connect the hot live wire from the wall box to the black wire on the dimmer using a wire cap.
    • Connect the wire going to the light fixture to the yellow wire on the dimmer using a wire cap.
    • Connect the white wire from the dimmer to the neutral wires in your wall box using a wire cap.
  6. 3-Way Wiring (2 Red, 1 Yellow, 1 White Wire):

    • Before disconnecting your old 3-way switch, identify the common wire (usually connected to a screw of a different color than the other two). Tag this wire with electrical tape.
    • Connect the tagged common wire from the wall box to the yellow wire on the dimmer using a wire cap.
    • Connect the other two wires (travelers) from the wall box to the red and red-striped wires on the dimmer using wire caps. The order of these two connections does not matter.
    • Connect the white wire from the dimmer to the neutral wires in your wall box using a wire cap.
  7. Secure Dimmer: Gently push all wires back into the wall box and secure the dimmer to the wall box with the provided screws.
  8. Install Wall Plate: Attach the coordinating wall plate (sold separately) over the dimmer.
  9. Restore Power: Turn the power back on at the circuit breaker.

Operating Instructions

The Lutron Diva dimmer provides intuitive control over your lighting.

  • On/Off Control: Press the large paddle switch to turn the lights on or off. When turned on, the lights will return to your last preset dim level.
  • Dimming Control: Use the small slide control located next to the paddle switch to adjust the light intensity. Slide up to brighten and down to dim.
  • Locator Light: A soft locator light will glow when the dimmer is in the off position, making it easy to find in the dark.

Maintenance

To clean your Lutron Diva dimmer, wipe with a soft, damp cloth. Do not use chemical cleaners or abrasive materials. There are no user-serviceable parts inside the dimmer. Any repairs should be performed by qualified personnel.

Troubleshooting

  • Lights do not turn on: Check the circuit breaker to ensure power is restored. Verify all wiring connections are secure. Ensure the dimmer is compatible with your lighting load (300W incandescent or 120W halogen).
  • Lights flicker or hum: Ensure the dimmer is properly grounded. Verify the load does not exceed the dimmer's maximum wattage.
  • Dimmer is warm to the touch: It is normal for the dimmer to feel warm during operation. If it becomes excessively hot, turn off power and consult a qualified electrician.
