2. Safety Information

To ensure safe operation and prevent damage, observe the following precautions:

  • Power Source: Connect the unit only to an AC outlet of the voltage specified on the rear panel.
  • Ventilation: Ensure adequate ventilation. Do not block ventilation openings. Maintain a minimum distance around the unit for proper airflow.
  • Water and Moisture: Do not expose the unit to rain or moisture. Do not place objects filled with liquids, such as vases, on the unit.
  • Heat: Avoid placing the unit near heat sources such as radiators, heat registers, stoves, or other apparatus (including amplifiers) that produce heat.
  • Cleaning: Disconnect the power cord from the wall outlet before cleaning. Use a dry cloth for cleaning.
  • Servicing: Do not attempt to service this product yourself. Refer all servicing to qualified service personnel.

3. Features

The ONKYO SL-D501(D) Powered Subwoofer incorporates several advanced technologies for superior bass performance:

  • VL Digital Amplifier: Onkyo's original technology designed to deliver music free from noise, ensuring clean and powerful amplification.
  • AERO ACOUSTIC DRIVE: This technology achieves high-speed bass response by utilizing a specially designed slit-type bass reflex duct, which minimizes the inherent muffled sound often associated with conventional cylindrical ducts.
  • Balanced Bass Reproduction: The combination of advanced technologies delivers bass with both impressive richness (volume) and precise speed.
  • Cabinet Finish: The unit is available in a real wood veneer finish, providing an elegant aesthetic.

4. Setup

4.1 Placement

Proper placement of your subwoofer is crucial for optimal sound performance. Consider the following:

  • Corner Placement: Placing the subwoofer in a corner of the room can often enhance bass output due to room acoustics.
  • Near Front Speakers: Positioning the subwoofer near your main front speakers can help create a more seamless soundstage.
  • Listening Position: Experiment with different locations by temporarily placing the subwoofer at your primary listening position, then moving around the room to find where the bass sounds most balanced and impactful.
  • Stability: Ensure the subwoofer is placed on a stable, level surface to prevent vibrations and unwanted noise.

  1. Connect an RCA cable from the subwoofer pre-out (LFE or SUB OUT) on your AV receiver to the INPUT (MONO) jack on the SL-D501(D) rear panel.
  2. Adjust the subwoofer's volume and crossover frequency settings on your AV receiver.

Option 2: Using Speaker Level Input (For Amplifiers without Subwoofer Output)

  1. Connect speaker wires from the speaker outputs of your amplifier/receiver to the SPEAKER LEVEL INPUT terminals (R+-, L+-) on the SL-D501(D) rear panel.
  2. Then, connect speaker wires from the SPEAKER LEVEL OUTPUT terminals (R+-, L+-) on the SL-D501(D) to your main front speakers.
  3. Ensure correct polarity (+ to + and - to -) for all connections.

After making connections, plug the subwoofer's power cord into a wall outlet.

The subwoofer has a power switch, typically located on the rear panel. Some models may also feature an auto-standby function, where the unit automatically turns on when an audio signal is detected and enters standby mode after a period of inactivity.

The 'POWER' indicator light on the front panel will illuminate when the unit is on.

5.2 Adjusting Settings

The SL-D501(D) can be controlled remotely. Adjustments for volume, crossover frequency, and phase are typically found on the rear panel or accessible via the remote control.

  • Volume: Adjust the subwoofer's output level to blend seamlessly with your main speakers.
  • Crossover Frequency: This control determines the highest frequency the subwoofer will reproduce. Set it to match the low-frequency capabilities of your main speakers. A common starting point is 80 Hz.
  • Phase: The phase control (0° or 180°) helps ensure that the subwoofer's sound waves are in sync with your main speakers. Experiment with both settings to find the one that produces the most coherent and impactful bass at your listening position.

6. Maintenance

Regular maintenance helps prolong the life and performance of your subwoofer.

  • Cleaning: Wipe the cabinet with a soft, dry cloth. For stubborn dirt, lightly dampen the cloth with water and then wipe dry. Avoid using abrasive cleaners, waxes, or solvents, as they can damage the finish.
  • Dust: Regularly dust the speaker grille and cabinet to prevent dust buildup, which can affect sound quality and ventilation.
  • Ventilation: Ensure that the ventilation openings on the unit are not obstructed by dust or other objects.
