Setup

Follow these steps to correctly set up your Phono Box DC:

  1. Placement: Position the Phono Box DC near your turntable and amplifier. Its compact size allows for flexible placement.
  2. Cartridge Type Selection: Locate the MM/MC switch on the rear panel of the Phono Box DC. Set it according to your turntable's cartridge type (Moving Magnet or Moving Coil). Ensure this is set correctly for optimal sound quality.
  3. Connect Turntable to Input: Connect the RCA output cables from your turntable to the "In" (Left and Right) RCA inputs on the rear of the Phono Box DC.
  4. Connect Ground Wire: Connect the ground wire from your turntable to the ground terminal on the Phono Box DC. This is crucial for minimizing hum and noise.
  5. Connect Output to Amplifier: Connect the "Out" (Left and Right) RCA outputs from the Phono Box DC to a line-level input on your amplifier or receiver (e.g., "Aux", "CD", "Line In"). Do NOT connect it to an amplifier's dedicated "Phono" input, as this would result in over-amplification and distortion.
  6. Connect Power: Connect the supplied 18V DC power adapter to the "Power 18V===" input on the rear of the Phono Box DC, then plug the adapter into a suitable power outlet.

The Pro-Ject Audio Phono Box DC requires minimal maintenance:

Troubleshooting

If you encounter issues with your Phono Box DC, refer to the following common problems and solutions:

ProblemPossible CauseSolution
No sound or very low volumeIncorrect connections, MM/MC switch setting, power issue, amplifier input.
  • Verify all RCA cables are securely connected to the correct inputs/outputs.
  • Ensure the MM/MC switch matches your cartridge type.
  • Check that the power adapter is properly connected and plugged into a live outlet.
  • Confirm your amplifier is set to the correct line-level input (e.g., Aux, CD, Line In), not a dedicated Phono input.
Distorted or unclear soundIncorrect MM/MC switch setting, faulty cables, damaged cartridge.
  • Double-check the MM/MC switch setting.
  • Try replacing RCA cables to rule out cable issues.
  • Inspect your turntable's cartridge for damage or wear.
Humming or buzzing noiseImproper grounding, interference, faulty cables.
  • Ensure the turntable's ground wire is securely connected to the Phono Box DC's ground terminal.
  • Verify that all components (turntable, preamp, amplifier) are plugged into the same power strip or wall outlet to avoid ground loops.
  • Move the Phono Box DC away from other electronic devices that might cause interference (e.g., Wi-Fi routers, power supplies, large transformers).
