Onkyo M-5000R Reference Series Power Amplifier

Instruction Manual

1. Introduction

The Onkyo M-5000R is a high-fidelity power amplifier designed to deliver exceptional audio performance. It incorporates advanced technologies such as AWRAT (Advanced Wide Range Amplifier Technology) and a Quad Push-Pull Amplification Design with Three Stage Inverted Darlington Circuitry to ensure precise signal reproduction and efficient power output. This manual provides essential information for the proper setup, operation, and maintenance of your M-5000R amplifier.

1.1. Safety Information

Always read and follow all safety instructions before operating the amplifier. Keep the unit away from water, moisture, and direct heat sources. Ensure proper ventilation to prevent overheating. Do not attempt to service the unit yourself; refer all servicing to qualified personnel.

2. Setup

2.1. Placement

Place the amplifier on a stable, level surface with adequate ventilation. Ensure there is at least 6 inches (15 cm) of clear space above and around the unit to allow for proper heat dissipation. Avoid placing it near heat sources or in direct sunlight.

2.2. Power Connection

Connect the supplied AC power cord to the amplifier's AC inlet and then to a suitable wall outlet. The amplifier operates on 1 Volt (AC) power. Ensure the power outlet matches the voltage requirements of the amplifier.

2.3. Audio Connections

The M-5000R offers both RCA (unbalanced) and XLR (balanced) input options. Choose the connection type that matches your preamplifier or audio source.

  • RCA Input: Use high-quality RCA cables to connect the audio output of your preamplifier to the RCA inputs (L/R) on the M-5000R.
  • XLR Input: For optimal signal integrity, use balanced XLR cables to connect your preamplifier's XLR outputs to the XLR inputs (L/R) on the M-5000R. Ensure the XLR input selector switch is set to 'XLR'.

2.4. Speaker Connections

Connect your speakers to the corresponding speaker terminals on the rear panel. Observe correct polarity (+ to + and - to -) for each speaker. The M-5000R supports speaker impedances from 4 to 16 ohms. For monaural amplification in BTL (Bridged Tied Load) mode, the recommended speaker impedance is 8 ohms.

  • Stereo Connection: Connect one speaker to the Left channel terminals and the other to the Right channel terminals.
  • BTL (Bridged Tied Load) Connection: For higher power output in a monaural setup, connect a single speaker to the dedicated BTL terminals. Refer to the markings on the rear panel for correct BTL wiring.

2.5. Control Connections

  • 12V Trigger: Connect a 12V trigger cable from your preamplifier or source component to the 12V TRIGGER IN port. This allows the amplifier to automatically power on/off with the connected device.
  • Auto Standby: The AUTO STANDBY switch enables or disables the automatic power-off function. When enabled, the amplifier will enter standby mode after a period of no audio signal.

3. Operating Instructions

3.1. Basic Operation

  1. Power On/Off: Press the POWER button on the front panel to turn the amplifier on or off. The ON/STANDBY indicator will illuminate when the unit is powered on.
  2. Input Selection: Use the INPUT SELECT switch on the rear panel to choose between RCA and XLR inputs, depending on your connection.
  3. Meter Range: The METER RANGE button on the front panel adjusts the sensitivity of the power meters. Select 'x1' for normal listening levels and 'x10' for higher output levels to prevent the needles from pegging.

3.2. Advanced Features

  • AWRAT (Advanced Wide Range Amplifier Technology): This technology ensures precise signal processing and wide frequency response for accurate audio reproduction.
  • Quad Push-Pull Amplification Design: Provides robust and stable power output, minimizing distortion even at high volumes.
  • Three Stage Inverted Darlington Circuitry: Enhances current delivery and linearity, contributing to the amplifier's dynamic performance.
  • Massive Toroidal Transformers: Two large toroidal transformers with a sub-transformer provide stable and clean power to all amplifier stages, crucial for dynamic audio.
  • Balanced XLR Input: Offers superior noise rejection for long cable runs and professional audio setups.

4. Maintenance

To ensure the longevity and optimal performance of your Onkyo M-5000R amplifier, follow these maintenance guidelines:

  • Cleaning: Wipe the exterior surfaces with a soft, dry cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners, waxes, or solvents as they may damage the finish.
  • Ventilation: Regularly check that the ventilation openings on the top and sides of the amplifier are not obstructed. Dust accumulation can impede airflow and lead to overheating.
  • Power Cord: Periodically inspect the power cord for any signs of damage. If damaged, replace it immediately with an authorized Onkyo replacement.

5. Troubleshooting

If you encounter issues with your M-5000R amplifier, refer to the table below for common problems and their solutions. If the problem persists, contact Onkyo customer support.
