Safety Information
Always prioritize safety during installation and maintenance. Ensure all local plumbing and building codes are followed. If you are unsure about any step, consult a qualified professional.
- Verify the water heater is properly drained and disconnected from power/gas before beginning installation.
- Wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), such as gloves and eye protection.
- Ensure the mounting surface (wall studs) is structurally sound and capable of supporting the water heater's weight and resisting seismic forces.
- Do not overtighten bolts, as this may damage the water heater or mounting surface.
- Keep the strapping at least 4 inches (102mm) above the controls at the lower point.
Installation Instructions
The Holdrite QuickStrap QS-50 is designed for straightforward installation. Follow these steps carefully:
- Prepare the Water Heater: Ensure the water heater is in its final desired position and is stable.
- Determine Strap Placement: Strapping shall be at points within the upper one-third (1/3) and lower one-third (1/3) of its vertical dimensions. At the lower point, a distance of not less than four (4) inches (102mm) shall be maintained above the controls with the strapping.
- Mark Mounting Points: Hold the straps around the water heater at the determined heights and mark the corresponding locations on the wall studs where the J-clips will be attached.
- Attach J-clips: Secure the J-clips to the wall studs using appropriate fasteners (e.g., 3/8 inch carriage bolts and hex nuts provided). Ensure they are firmly anchored.
- Thread Straps: Thread the galvanized stainless steel straps through the J-clips and around the water heater.
- Secure and Adjust: Utilize the QuickLink system to tighten the straps around the water heater. The system allows for full adjustment from the front side. Ensure the straps are snug but do not deform the water heater tank.
- Final Check: Verify that both upper and lower straps are securely fastened and the water heater is firmly restrained against the wall.

Usage Guidelines
Once installed, the Holdrite QuickStrap QS-50 provides passive seismic restraint. No ongoing user operation is required. Ensure the straps remain taut and free from damage.
Maintenance
Regular inspection of the Holdrite QuickStrap QS-50 system is recommended to ensure continued effectiveness:
- Annual Inspection: Annually inspect the straps and mounting hardware for any signs of corrosion, wear, loosening, or damage.
- Post-Seismic Event Inspection: After any seismic activity, immediately inspect the water heater and its restraints for displacement or damage.
- Tightness Check: Ensure the straps remain tight against the water heater. If any slack is observed, re-tighten using the QuickLink system.
- Cleaning: Keep the straps and hardware clean and free from debris.
Troubleshooting
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Straps are loose | Settling of water heater or building, initial improper tightening. | Re-tighten the straps using the QuickLink system until snug. |
| Visible corrosion on hardware | Exposure to moisture or harsh environment. | While the product is galvanized, severe conditions can cause issues. Replace corroded components if structural integrity is compromised. Ensure proper ventilation around the water heater. |
| Water heater still shifts during minor tremors | Straps not tight enough, improper placement, or inadequate wall anchoring. | Verify strap tightness and placement according to instructions. Ensure J-clips are securely anchored to structural studs. Consult a professional if issues persist. |
