1. Product Overview

The Nikon FT-1 F-Mount Adapter is designed to enable the use of select F-Mount NIKKOR lenses, originally intended for Nikon D-SLR/SLR cameras, with Nikon 1 series cameras, specifically the Nikon 1 V1 and J1. This adapter facilitates the connection of a broader range of lenses, expanding the photographic capabilities of the Nikon 1 system.

When an F-Mount NIKKOR lens is attached via the FT-1 adapter, the angle of view is effectively multiplied by 2.7 times the lens's original focal length. For instance, a 300mm F-Mount lens will provide an angle of view equivalent to an 800mm lens on a full-frame camera, offering super-telephoto capabilities.

3. Setup and Installation

3.1 Firmware Update

Before using the FT-1 adapter, ensure that your Nikon 1 J1 or V1 camera's firmware is updated to at least version 1.10. Refer to the Nikon support website for the latest firmware and update instructions.

3.2 Attaching the FT-1 Adapter to the Camera

1. Turn off the camera.
2. Remove the body cap from the camera and the rear cap from the FT-1 adapter.
3. Align the mounting mark on the FT-1 adapter with the mounting mark on the camera body.
4. Rotate the adapter counter-clockwise until it clicks into place.

3.3 Attaching an F-Mount NIKKOR Lens to the FT-1 Adapter

1. Remove the front cap from the FT-1 adapter and the rear cap from the F-Mount NIKKOR lens.
2. Align the mounting mark on the lens with the mounting mark on the FT-1 adapter.
3. Rotate the lens counter-clockwise until it clicks into place.

4. Operating Instructions

4.1 Autofocus and Exposure

• AF-S Lenses: Autofocus and auto-exposure (AF/AE) are supported. Focus mode is restricted to AF-S (Single AF), and AF-area mode is fixed to Single-point, using only the center focus point. The focus indicator (rangefinder) can be used.
• AF-D Lenses: Autofocus is generally not supported. Manual focus is required.
• Non-CPU Lenses (e.g., AI-S): Autofocus is not supported. Manual focus is required. The rangefinder function is not available, and EXIF data for these lenses will not be captured by the camera.
• Exposure Modes: For CPU lenses, P, S, A, and M modes are available. For non-CPU lenses, only A (Aperture-priority auto) and M (Manual) modes can be used.

4.2 Vibration Reduction (VR) Lenses

When using VR-enabled F-Mount NIKKOR lenses with the FT-1 adapter, the Vibration Reduction function operates. Users can enable or specify VR settings using the switches on the lens itself. NORMAL and ACTIVE VR modes are supported if the lens is equipped with them. If a lens does not have NORMAL/ACTIVE modes, VR functions in NORMAL mode.

Important Note: Some VR lenses, when mounted on the FT-1, may keep the VR mechanism energized continuously, even when the shutter release is not pressed. To conserve battery life, it is recommended to manually turn off VR using the switch on the lens when not actively shooting.

4.3 Limitations

• The Smart Photo Selector function cannot be used with the FT-1 adapter.
• Motion Snapshot mode is not available when using the FT-1.
• When using AF-S lenses with continuous shooting, focus is locked after the first shot.
• For Nikon 1 V2 cameras, larger tripod quick release plates may interfere with attaching/detaching the adapter due to the camera's grip. Consider using smaller plates or adjusting mounting technique.

5. Maintenance

To ensure the longevity and optimal performance of your FT-1 F-Mount Adapter, follow these maintenance guidelines:

• Cleaning: Use a soft, lint-free cloth to gently wipe the exterior of the adapter. For stubborn smudges, a slightly dampened cloth with water can be used, followed by immediate drying.
• Lens Mount Contacts: Keep the electronic contacts on both the adapter and your lenses clean. Use a clean, dry cotton swab or a specialized lens contact cleaner. Avoid touching the contacts with your fingers.
• Storage: When not in use, attach the front and rear caps to the adapter to protect the mounts from dust and debris. Store the adapter in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures.
• Handling: Always handle the adapter by its body. Avoid applying excessive force when attaching or detaching lenses or the camera.

6. Troubleshooting

Common Issues and Solutions:

Issue: Lens not recognized or functions not working.

Solution:

• Ensure camera firmware is updated to the latest version (at least 1.10 for J1/V1).
• Clean the electronic contacts on both the adapter and the lens.
• Ensure the lens is securely mounted and clicked into place on the adapter.
• Verify lens compatibility with the FT-1 adapter. Not all F-mount lenses support full functionality.

Issue: Rapid battery drain when using VR lenses.

Solution:

• Manually turn off the Vibration Reduction (VR) function on the lens when not actively shooting, as some VR lenses may remain energized continuously when mounted on the FT-1.

Issue: Autofocus not working with certain lenses.

Solution:

• Autofocus is only supported with AF-S NIKKOR lenses. AF-D and non-CPU lenses require manual focusing.
• Ensure the camera's focus mode is set to AF-S (Single AF) and AF-area mode is Single-point, as these are fixed settings when using the FT-1 with AF-S lenses.
