2. Pressing a Chain Link
To press the side plate onto a new master link:
- Place the master link pins through the chain ends and position the outer side plate.
- Align the tool in the "Press" position, ensuring the press plate is correctly seated against the outer side plate of the master link.
- Slowly turn the tool's handle to press the side plate onto the master link pins until it is flush and securely seated. Do not over-press.
3. Riveting a Master Link
To flare the pins of a rivet-style master link:
- After pressing the side plate, position the tool in the "Rivet" setting with the rivet flare die.
- Align the rivet flare die over one of the master link pins.
- Slowly turn the tool's handle to flare the pin. Repeat for the other pin. The flared diameter should be approximately 0.200-0.217 inches (5.1-5.5 mm) for 520/525/530 chains. Consult your chain manufacturer's specifications for exact measurements.
- Inspect the flared pins to ensure they are securely fastened and properly mushroomed.
