5. Installation and Setup

Before You Begin: Ensure all power to the circuit where the contactor will be installed is completely disconnected. Use a voltage tester to confirm the absence of power.

  1. Mounting: Secure the Packard C220A contactor to a suitable DIN rail or mounting surface within an appropriate electrical enclosure. Ensure adequate ventilation and clearance around the contactor.
  2. Power Wiring:
    • Connect the incoming line voltage wires to the designated line terminals (L1, L2) of the contactor.
    • Connect the load wires (to the motor, heater, etc.) to the designated load terminals (T1, T2) of the contactor.
    • Ensure all power connections are tight. Apply torque of 22 IN LBS for screws and 40 IN LBS for lugs, as specified for CU 75°C conductors.
  3. Control Wiring:
    • Connect the 24 VAC control circuit wires to the coil terminals of the contactor. The coil terminals are typically marked A1 and A2 or similar.
    • The control circuit is responsible for energizing and de-energizing the contactor coil, thereby opening or closing the main power contacts.
  4. Verification: Double-check all wiring for correctness, tightness, and adherence to local electrical codes. Ensure no bare wires are exposed.

CAUTION: Incorrect wiring can lead to equipment damage, fire, or personal injury.

6. Operation

The Packard C220A contactor operates automatically based on the control circuit signal. When the 24 VAC control voltage is applied to the coil terminals, the coil energizes, creating a magnetic field that pulls the armature, closing the main power contacts. This allows current to flow from the line terminals to the load terminals, activating the connected equipment.

When the 24 VAC control voltage is removed from the coil, the magnetic field collapses, and springs return the armature to its original position, opening the main power contacts and de-energizing the connected equipment.

Normal Operation Sequence:

  1. Control signal (24 VAC) applied to coil.
  2. Contactor coil energizes.
  3. Main power contacts close.
  4. Power flows to the connected load.
  5. Control signal removed from coil.
  6. Contactor coil de-energizes.
  7. Main power contacts open.
  8. Power to the connected load is interrupted.

7. Maintenance

The Packard C220A contactor is designed for reliable operation with minimal maintenance. However, periodic inspection is recommended to ensure optimal performance and safety.

  • Power Disconnection: Always disconnect all power before performing any maintenance.
  • Visual Inspection: Periodically inspect the contactor for signs of wear, damage, or overheating (e.g., discoloration, melted plastic). Check for loose connections or foreign objects.
  • Terminal Tightness: Verify that all terminal screws are tight. Loose connections can cause overheating and arcing.
  • Contact Condition: While typically not user-serviceable, excessive arcing or pitting of contacts may indicate a need for replacement.
  • Cleaning: Keep the contactor free from dust, dirt, and moisture. Use a dry, non-conductive brush or compressed air for cleaning.

NOTE: Do not attempt to repair internal components of the contactor. If significant wear or damage is observed, replace the unit.

8. Troubleshooting

This section provides guidance for common issues. For complex problems, consult a qualified electrician.

ProblemPossible CauseSolution
Contactor does not energize (no click sound)
  • No control voltage to coil
  • Incorrect coil voltage
  • Open control circuit (e.g., thermostat, switch)
  • Damaged coil
  • Check for 24 VAC at coil terminals.
  • Verify control voltage matches contactor coil rating (24 VAC).
  • Inspect control circuit components for faults.
  • Replace contactor if coil is damaged.
Contactor energizes but load does not receive power
  • Loose power connections
  • Damaged main contacts
  • Open circuit in load wiring
  • Tighten all power terminal screws.
  • Replace contactor if contacts are visibly damaged or not closing.
  • Check continuity of load wiring.
Contactor hums loudly or overheats
  • Incorrect coil voltage
  • Foreign material in magnet assembly
  • Excessive load current
  • Verify control voltage.
  • Inspect and clean magnet assembly (with power off).
  • Ensure load current does not exceed 20 Amps per pole.
