Setup

Powering On

The BOSS MICRO BR BR-80 can be powered using two AA batteries or an optional AC adapter (not included). Ensure batteries are inserted correctly according to polarity markings. For optimal performance and extended use, especially during recording sessions, using an AC adapter is recommended.

Connections

The device features various connection ports for input and output:

  • 3.5mm Audio Input: For connecting external audio sources such as guitars, microphones, or other instruments.
  • USB Port: For connecting to a Personal Computer, allowing data transfer and use as an audio interface.
  • microSDHC Card Slot: For memory expansion and storage of recorded data. Ensure a compatible microSDHC card (up to 32 GB) is inserted.
  • Headphones Jack (3.5mm): For monitoring audio output.

Operating Modes

The BR-80 offers three primary modes, each tailored for specific musical tasks:

Multi-Track Recorder (MTR) Mode

This mode functions as a full-fledged digital multi-track recorder. It allows you to record up to 8 tracks simultaneously (2 tracks at a time) and provides 64 virtual tracks for extensive layering and alternative takes. Use MTR mode for composing and arranging complete songs, applying COSM effects, and mixing your tracks.

eBand Mode

eBand mode is designed for practice and performance. You can import your favorite songs (MP3s) and use the BR-80 to slow down playback without changing the pitch, loop specific sections for practice, or remove vocals for karaoke-style jamming.

Live Rec Mode

Utilize Live Rec mode for quick, high-quality stereo recordings. The built-in condenser microphones are optimized for capturing acoustic instruments, vocals, or even band rehearsals. This mode is perfect for instantly documenting musical ideas or capturing live performances with clarity.

The BR-80 allows for seamless transitions between these modes. For example, you can record a quick idea in Live Rec mode, then import it into MTR mode to build a full song around it, and finally transfer the finished song to eBand mode for practice or live use.

Maintenance

  • Cleaning: Use a soft, dry cloth to wipe the exterior of the unit. Avoid abrasive cleaners, solvents, or waxes.
  • Storage: Store the BR-80 in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight, extreme temperatures, and high humidity. Remove batteries if the unit will not be used for an extended period to prevent leakage.
  • Handling: Handle the device with care. Avoid dropping it or subjecting it to strong impacts, which can damage internal components.

Troubleshooting

No Power

Check Batteries: Ensure fresh AA batteries are correctly inserted with the correct polarity. If using an AC adapter, verify it is properly connected and the power outlet is functional.

Battery Type: Confirm you are using the specified battery type (Alkaline recommended).

Recording Issues (No Sound/Distorted Sound)

Input Level: Adjust the input level knob to an appropriate setting. Too low will result in no sound, too high will cause distortion.

Microphone/Instrument Connection: Ensure external microphones or instruments are securely connected to the correct input jack.

Mode Selection: Verify you are in the correct recording mode (MTR or Live Rec) for your intended purpose.

SD Card: Check if the microSDHC card is inserted correctly and has sufficient free space. A full or corrupted card can prevent recording.

Connectivity Problems (USB)

USB Cable: Use a reliable USB cable and ensure it is securely connected to both the BR-80 and your computer.

Driver Installation: If using the BR-80 as an audio interface, ensure the necessary drivers are installed on your computer. Refer to the official BOSS website for driver downloads.

Computer Settings: Check your computer's audio input/output settings to ensure the BR-80 is selected as the active device.
