Setup Guide

1. Unpacking

Carefully remove the HT Optimax reel from its packaging. Inspect the reel for any visible damage that may have occurred during shipping. Ensure all components, including the handle, are present.

2. Attaching to Fishing Rod

  1. Locate the reel seat on your fishing rod.
  2. Align the reel foot of the HT Optimax reel with the reel seat.
  3. Tighten the locking nut(s) on the reel seat until the reel is securely fastened and does not wobble. Do not overtighten.

3. Spooling Line (if re-spooling)

Your HT Optimax reel comes pre-spooled with fishing line. If you need to replace the line or prefer a different type, follow these steps:

  1. Open the bail arm.
  2. Tie the new fishing line to the spool using an arbor knot or similar secure knot.
  3. Close the bail arm.
  4. Maintain light tension on the line as you reel it onto the spool, ensuring even distribution. Avoid overfilling the spool.

Operating Instructions

1. Casting

  1. Hold the rod and reel comfortably.
  2. Use your index finger to hold the fishing line against the rod handle.
  3. Open the bail arm with your other hand.
  4. Bring the rod back over your shoulder, then swiftly cast forward, releasing your index finger as the rod reaches the desired casting angle.
  5. Once the lure or bait hits the water, close the bail arm manually or by turning the handle.

2. Retrieving

To retrieve your line, simply turn the reel handle in a smooth, consistent motion. The bail roller will guide the line back onto the spool evenly.

3. Adjusting Drag

The HT Optimax features a front drag system. The drag knob is located on the front of the spool.

  • Turn the drag knob clockwise to increase drag tension (make it harder for line to pull out).
  • Turn the drag knob counter-clockwise to decrease drag tension (make it easier for line to pull out).

Set the drag tension appropriate for the line strength and the size of fish you expect to catch. A good starting point is to set the drag to about one-third of your line's breaking strength.

Care and Maintenance

1. Cleaning

  • After each use, especially in saltwater, rinse the reel with fresh water. Do not submerge the reel.
  • Wipe down the exterior with a soft, damp cloth to remove dirt, salt, and debris.
  • Use a cotton swab to clean hard-to-reach areas around the bail and handle.
  • Ensure the reel is completely dry before storage.

2. Lubrication

  • Periodically apply a small amount of fishing reel oil to moving parts such as the handle shaft and bail arm pivot points.
  • Apply a thin layer of fishing reel grease to the main gear and pinion gear if disassembling for deeper maintenance (recommended for experienced users only).
  • Avoid over-lubrication, as this can attract dirt and debris.

3. Storage

  • Store the reel in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures.
  • Loosen the drag knob slightly before storage to relieve pressure on the drag washers.
  • Consider using a reel cover or bag to protect it from dust and scratches.
