Setup
1. Charging the Battery
The camera uses an EN-EL19 Rechargeable Li-ion Battery. Before first use, fully charge the battery using the supplied EH-69P AC Adapter/Charger and UC-E6 USB Cable. Connect the camera to the AC adapter, then plug the adapter into a power outlet. The charging indicator will show the charging status.
2. Inserting the Memory Card
The COOLPIX S3100 supports SD, SDHC, and SDXC memory cards. Open the battery/card compartment cover, insert the memory card into the slot with the contacts facing the correct direction until it clicks into place. Close the cover securely.
3. Initial Power On
Press the power button to turn on the camera. Follow the on-screen prompts to set the date, time, and time zone. Ensure these settings are accurate for proper image file management.
Operating the Camera
Basic Photography
To take a photo, frame your subject using the 2.7-inch LCD. The camera features a 5x optical zoom NIKKOR glass lens. Use the zoom control to adjust the focal length. Press the shutter button halfway down to focus, then press it fully to capture the image. The 14.0-megapixel CCD sensor ensures high image quality.
Scene Modes
The camera offers 19 Scene Modes, including Portrait, Party, Landscape, and Sunset. These modes automatically optimize camera settings for specific shooting conditions. Select the appropriate scene mode to achieve desired results. The new Pet Mode automatically detects and focuses on the faces of dogs or cats and fires the shutter.
HD Movie Recording
The COOLPIX S3100 can record high-quality 720p HD movies. Use the dedicated One-Touch recording button to start and stop video capture. Digital zoom is available during recording. Movies can be played back directly on the camera or connected to a TV or computer.
Image Stabilization
The camera incorporates a 4-way Electronic VR (Vibration Reduction) Image Stabilization system to minimize blur caused by camera shake. Motion Detection also adjusts shutter speed and ISO to keep moving subjects clear.
Smart Portrait System
Enhance your portraits with features like Smile Timer, which automatically releases the shutter when your subject smiles. Face-Priority AF detects and focuses on up to 12 faces. Blink Warning alerts you if a subject may have blinked, and in-camera Red-Eye Fix™ automatically corrects red-eye. Skin Softening smooths skin tones for flattering results.
Reviewing and Transferring Images
Use the playback button to view captured photos and videos on the LCD. To transfer images to a computer, connect the camera using the supplied UC-E6 USB Cable. The Nikon View NX 2 CD-ROM software can assist with image management and transfer.
Maintenance
Cleaning the Camera
- Lens: Use a soft, lint-free cloth or a lens brush to gently remove dust. For stubborn smudges, use a lens cleaning solution applied to the cloth, not directly to the lens.
- Body: Wipe the camera body with a soft, dry cloth. For tougher dirt, slightly dampen the cloth with water. Avoid using alcohol, solvents, or abrasive cleaners.
- LCD Monitor: Clean with a soft, dry cloth. Avoid pressing hard on the screen.
Battery Care
- Store the battery in a cool, dry place when not in use.
- Avoid exposing the battery to extreme temperatures.
- If the camera will not be used for an extended period, remove the battery.
Storage
When storing the camera for long periods, remove the battery and memory card. Store the camera in a dry, well-ventilated area, away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures. Use a camera bag or case to protect it from dust and scratches.
Troubleshooting

| Images are blurry. | Camera shake: Hold the camera steady or use a tripod. Subject movement: Use a faster shutter speed or flash. Focus issue: Ensure the camera has focused correctly before fully pressing the shutter button. Clean the lens. |
