Verify that all components are present before beginning installation:

  • 1x Polished Chrome Rim Cylinder
  • 1x Yale 77 Traditional Nightlatch 60mm Polished Chrome (main body)
  • 2x Keys
  • 1x Strike Plate
  • Fixing Pack (screws and other necessary fittings)
  • Instruction Sheets

Setup and Installation

This nightlatch is suitable for wooden doors up to 57 mm thick. The backset size is 60 mm (measurement from the edge of the door to the center of the keyhole). If replacing an existing unit, existing holes may be utilized. Refer to the included detailed instruction sheets for precise measurements and drilling templates.

Tools Required:

  • Drill
  • Drill bits (appropriate sizes for cylinder and screws)
  • Pencil
  • Measuring tape
  • Screwdriver
  • Chisel (if recessing is required for the strike plate or nightlatch body)

Installation Steps:

  1. Prepare the Door: Using the provided template, mark the positions for the rim cylinder hole on the outside of the door and the fixing screws for the nightlatch body on the inside. Ensure the 60mm backset is correctly measured.
  2. Drill Holes: Carefully drill the necessary holes for the rim cylinder and the nightlatch body fixing screws.
  3. Install Rim Cylinder: Insert the rim cylinder through the drilled hole from the outside of the door. Secure it from the inside using the provided fixing screws and cylinder rose.
  4. Install Nightlatch Body: Position the nightlatch body on the inside of the door, aligning it with the rim cylinder's tail bar and the drilled screw holes. Secure the nightlatch body to the door using the provided screws. Ensure the latch bolt operates smoothly.
  5. Install Strike Plate: Close the door and mark the position where the latch bolt meets the door frame. Install the strike plate on the door frame, ensuring it aligns perfectly with the latch bolt for smooth closing and locking. You may need to chisel a slight recess for a flush fit.
  6. Test Operation: Test the nightlatch thoroughly from both inside and outside using the key and the internal knob/snib.

Operating Instructions

The Yale P-77-CH-CH-60 Nightlatch offers straightforward operation for securing your door.

Locking and Unlocking:

  • Automatic Latching: When the door closes, the latch bolt automatically engages with the strike plate, securing the door.
  • From Outside (Key): Insert the key into the external rim cylinder and turn to retract the latch bolt, allowing the door to open.
  • From Inside (Knob): Turn the internal knob to retract the latch bolt and open the door.
  • Snib Button (Hold Back): The snib button, located on the nightlatch body, can be used for two functions:
    • Hold Back: Push the snib button to temporarily hold the latch bolt in the retracted position, keeping the door unlocked and allowing it to be opened without turning the knob or key.
    • Deadlocking: Push the snib button and turn it to deadlock the latch bolt. This prevents the latch bolt from being retracted by the external key, providing additional overnight security. To unlock, turn the snib button back to its original position and then use the internal knob or external key.

Maintenance

Regular maintenance ensures the longevity and smooth operation of your Yale Nightlatch.

  • Cleaning: Wipe the exterior surfaces with a soft, damp cloth. Avoid abrasive cleaners or solvents, which can damage the chrome finish.
  • Lubrication: Periodically apply a small amount of graphite powder or a silicone-based lubricant to the keyway of the rim cylinder and the moving parts of the latch mechanism. Do not use oil-based lubricants as they can attract dirt and dust.
  • Check Fasteners: Periodically check all mounting screws to ensure they are tight. Loose screws can affect the lock's performance and security.

Troubleshooting

If you encounter issues with your Yale Nightlatch, consider the following common solutions:

  • Key is difficult to turn or sticky:
    • Ensure the key is fully inserted.
    • Apply graphite powder or a silicone-based lubricant to the keyway.
    • Check if the key is bent or damaged. Use only original Yale keys or properly cut duplicates.
  • Latch bolt does not retract smoothly:
    • Check for obstructions in the strike plate or around the latch bolt.
    • Ensure the nightlatch body and strike plate are securely fastened and aligned.
    • Lubricate the latch mechanism as described in the Maintenance section.
  • Door does not close properly or latch bolt does not engage:
    • Verify the alignment of the nightlatch body and the strike plate. Adjust if necessary.
    • Check for door sag or frame movement that might misalign the lock components.

If problems persist, contact customer support or a qualified locksmith.
