Setup
1. Attaching the Lens
Align the red dot on the lens barrel with the red dot on the camera body's lens mount. Rotate the lens clockwise until it clicks into place. Ensure the lens is securely locked before use.
2. Loading Film
- Open the camera back by pulling up the film rewind knob.
- Insert a 35mm film cartridge into the film chamber.
- Pull the film leader across to the take-up spool and insert it into one of the slots.
- Advance the film using the film advance lever until the sprockets engage the film perforations.
- Close the camera back firmly.
- Advance the film two frames, pressing the shutter release button after each advance, to ensure the film is properly loaded and to reach the first unexposed frame. The frame counter should indicate '1'.
3. Installing Batteries (for Photomic T Meter)
The Photomic T meter requires batteries for operation. Locate the battery compartment, typically on the bottom or side of the meter housing. Insert the specified batteries, ensuring correct polarity. The meter will not function without power.
Operating Instructions
1. Setting Film Speed (ISO/ASA)
Rotate the ASA/ISO dial on the Photomic T meter to match the speed of the film loaded in the camera. This setting is crucial for accurate exposure readings.
2. Using the Photomic T Meter
The Photomic T meter provides through-the-lens (TTL) light metering. Look through the viewfinder and observe the meter needle. Adjust the aperture and/or shutter speed until the needle is centered, indicating correct exposure. The Nikon F also supports automatic exposure control.
3. Focusing
Look through the viewfinder and rotate the focusing ring on the lens until the subject appears sharp. The Nikon F typically features a split-image rangefinder or microprism collar for precise manual focusing.
4. Setting Shutter Speed
Rotate the shutter speed dial on top of the camera body to select the desired shutter speed. Speeds range from slow (e.g., 1 second) to fast (e.g., 1/1000th of a second or faster), plus 'B' for bulb mode.
5. Taking a Picture
Once the film speed, exposure, and focus are set, gently press the shutter release button located on the top of the camera body to take a photograph. After each shot, advance the film using the film advance lever to prepare for the next exposure.
6. Rewinding Film
When the film counter indicates the end of the roll, or when you wish to remove the film, press the film rewind release button (usually on the bottom of the camera) and then rotate the film rewind knob clockwise until resistance ceases, indicating the film is fully rewound into its cartridge. Open the camera back and remove the film.
Maintenance
1. Cleaning the Camera Body and Lens
- Use a soft, lint-free cloth to wipe the camera body. Avoid abrasive materials.
- For the lens, use a lens brush or air blower to remove dust. For smudges, use a specialized lens cleaning solution and a microfiber cloth. Apply solution to the cloth, not directly to the lens.
- Ensure no cleaning fluids enter the camera's internal mechanisms.
2. Battery Replacement
Replace the meter batteries when the meter needle becomes erratic or unresponsive. Refer to the battery installation section for proper procedure and battery type.
3. Storage
Store the camera in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures. If storing for extended periods, remove the batteries to prevent leakage.
Troubleshooting
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Shutter does not fire | Film not advanced; shutter locked; no film loaded | Advance film lever fully; check for shutter lock; ensure film is loaded correctly |
| Light meter not working | Dead batteries; incorrect battery installation; meter switch off | Replace batteries; check polarity; ensure meter is activated |
| Film advance lever stuck | Film not fully rewound; camera back not closed properly | Ensure film is fully rewound; check camera back latch |
| Images are blurry | Incorrect focus; camera shake; dirty lens | Re-focus carefully; use a tripod or faster shutter speed; clean lens |
