Setup and Installation
The Bussmann CB185-120 circuit breaker is designed for flush mounting. Proper installation is crucial for safety and optimal performance.
Before Installation
- Ensure the power source is disconnected before beginning any electrical work.
- Verify that the circuit breaker's current rating (120 Amps) and voltage rating (42 Vdc) are appropriate for your application.
- Identify a suitable, dry, and accessible location for flush mounting. The sealed waterproof housing provides protection, but direct exposure to extreme conditions should be minimized if possible.
Mounting Instructions
- Prepare the mounting surface: Cut an opening that accommodates the flush mount dimensions of the breaker (approximately 1.9"D x 1.9"W x 2.9"H).
- Insert the breaker into the prepared opening.
- Secure the breaker using appropriate fasteners through the mounting holes. Ensure a snug fit to maintain the waterproof seal.
Wiring Instructions
- Connect the positive input wire to one of the 1/4-28 threaded studs.
- Connect the positive output wire to the other 1/4-28 threaded stud.
- Use the installed SEMS nuts to secure the wire terminals firmly. Ensure all connections are tight to prevent arcing and overheating.
- Double-check all wiring for correct polarity and secure connections before restoring power.

Operating Instructions
Normal Operation
In normal operating conditions, the circuit breaker allows current to flow through the protected circuit.
Manual Reset / Trip Function
The CB185-120 features a manual reset mechanism. If an overcurrent condition occurs, the breaker will automatically trip, interrupting the circuit.
- To manually trip the breaker (e.g., for master disconnect), press the red push-to-trip button located on the front of the unit. This will open the circuit.
- To reset the breaker after it has tripped (either manually or due to overcurrent), push the button back in until it latches. Before resetting after an overcurrent, identify and resolve the cause of the overload.
Maintenance
The Bussmann CB185-120 circuit breaker is designed for durability and requires minimal maintenance.
- Periodically inspect the breaker and its connections for any signs of corrosion, damage, or loose wiring.
- Ensure the waterproof housing remains intact and free from cracks or punctures.
- Keep the area around the breaker clean and free from debris that could obstruct the push-to-trip button or ventilation.
- Do not attempt to disassemble the unit. There are no user-serviceable parts inside.
Troubleshooting
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Breaker trips frequently | Overload on the circuit, short circuit, or faulty appliance/component. | Reduce the load on the circuit. Inspect wiring and connected devices for shorts or malfunctions. If the issue persists, consult a qualified electrician. |
| Breaker does not reset | Persistent overload/short circuit, internal damage to the breaker. | Ensure the overload condition is resolved. If the breaker still does not reset, it may be damaged and require replacement. |
| No power to circuit, breaker not tripped | Loose connection, power source issue, or internal breaker failure. | Check all wiring connections for tightness. Verify the power source is active. If connections are secure and power is present, the breaker may be faulty and need replacement. |
