2. Safety Instructions
Always observe the following safety precautions to reduce the risk of electric shock, fire, and serious injury.
2.1 General Safety
- Read and understand all instructions before operating the machine.
- Keep the work area clean and well-lit. Cluttered or dark areas invite accidents.
- Do not operate power tools in explosive atmospheres, such as in the presence of flammable liquids, gases, or dust.
- Keep children and bystanders away while operating a power tool. Distractions can cause you to lose control.
2.2 Electrical Safety
- Power tool plugs must match the outlet. Never modify the plug in any way.
- Avoid body contact with earthed or grounded surfaces such as pipes, radiators, ranges, and refrigerators.
- Do not expose power tools to rain or wet conditions. Water entering a power tool will increase the risk of electric shock.
- Do not abuse the cord. Never use the cord for carrying, pulling, or unplugging the power tool.
2.3 Personal Safety
- Always wear eye protection. Use safety glasses or goggles.
- Wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) such as hearing protection, dust mask, and non-slip safety shoes.
- Dress properly. Do not wear loose clothing or jewelry. Keep hair, clothing, and gloves away from moving parts.
- Do not overreach. Keep proper footing and balance at all times.
- Always disconnect the power plug from the mains before making any adjustments, changing accessories, or storing power tools.

4. Setup
4.1 Mounting on PROXXON DP 400 Lathe
The PF 230 is designed for direct mounting onto the PROXXON DP 400 lathe. To mount the unit:
- Ensure the DP 400 lathe is powered off and unplugged.
- Remove the upper slide of the lathe.
- Position the supplied 110 x 70 mm slotted table onto the lathe bed, aligning it with the mounting points.
- Secure the slotted table using the provided fixing screws.
- Mount the PF 230 drill-milling head onto the designated position on the slotted table, ensuring it is firmly secured.

4.2 Installing Collets and Tools
The PF 230 uses collets to hold drilling and milling tools. Three collets (6 mm, 8 mm, 10 mm) are included.
- Select the appropriate collet size for your tool.
- Insert the collet into the spindle.
- Insert the tool (drill bit or milling cutter) into the collet.
- Tighten the collet nut firmly to secure the tool. Ensure the tool is seated correctly and not wobbling.

5. Operating Instructions
5.1 Power Connection
Connect the power cord to a grounded 230 Volt AC outlet. Ensure the power switch on the machine is in the "OFF" position before plugging in.
5.2 Adjusting Speed
The PF 230 offers multiple speed settings. Refer to the speed chart on the machine for recommended speeds based on material and tool diameter. Adjust the speed by changing the belt position on the pulleys. Always ensure the machine is unplugged before adjusting belt positions.
5.3 Workpiece Clamping
Secure your workpiece firmly to the slotted table using appropriate clamps or a machine vise. Loose workpieces can cause injury and damage to the machine or workpiece.
5.4 Drilling and Milling Operations
- With the workpiece secured and tool installed, switch the machine to the "ON" position.
- Carefully lower the spindle using the feed lever. Apply steady, even pressure.
- For milling, use the X and Y axis adjustments on the lathe's cross slide (if mounted on DP 400) to move the workpiece relative to the cutter.
- Monitor the cutting process. If the tool binds or the motor strains, reduce the feed rate or depth of cut.
- After completing the operation, raise the spindle, switch the machine "OFF", and wait for the spindle to stop completely before removing the workpiece.
6. Maintenance
Regular maintenance ensures the longevity and optimal performance of your PROXXON PF 230.
6.1 Cleaning
- Always unplug the machine before cleaning.
- Remove chips and dust from the machine after each use using a brush or vacuum cleaner.
- Do not use solvents or abrasive cleaners that could damage the machine's finish or components.
6.2 Lubrication
- Periodically apply a thin layer of machine oil to moving parts, such as the spindle shaft and lead screws, to ensure smooth operation and prevent corrosion.
- Avoid over-lubrication, which can attract dust and debris.
6.3 Storage
Store the machine in a clean, dry place, away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures. Cover the machine to protect it from dust.
7. Troubleshooting
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Machine does not start | No power supply; Power switch off; Faulty power cord. | Check power connection; Ensure switch is ON; Inspect power cord for damage. |
| Excessive vibration or noise | Loose mounting; Unbalanced tool; Worn bearings. | Tighten mounting screws; Check tool for balance and proper installation; Contact service for bearing replacement. |
| Tool not cutting efficiently | Dull tool; Incorrect speed; Excessive feed rate. | Replace or sharpen tool; Adjust speed according to material; Reduce feed rate. |
| Spindle difficult to move | Lack of lubrication; Accumulation of debris. | Lubricate spindle shaft; Clean thoroughly. |
