Setup
Unpacking and Inspection
Carefully unpack the multimeter and inspect it for any signs of damage during transit. Report any damage to your dealer or Fluke representative immediately.
Power Connection
The Fluke 8808A operates on 110V/120V AC power. Connect the supplied power cord to the instrument's rear panel power inlet and then to a grounded AC outlet. Ensure the correct voltage setting if applicable (check the rear panel for voltage selector, though typically auto-sensing for 110V/120V models).
Initial Power On
- Press the power button (⑂) located on the front panel.
- The display will illuminate and perform a self-test.
- Allow the instrument to warm up for at least 30 minutes for optimal accuracy.
Operating Instructions
Front Panel Controls and Connectors
Refer to Figure 1 for the layout of the front panel. Key areas include:
- Input Terminals: Located on the left, these are used for connecting test leads for voltage, current, and resistance measurements. Includes HI, LO, mA, and 10A terminals.
- Sense Terminals (4-wire): Used for 4-wire resistance measurements to eliminate lead resistance errors.
- Display: Shows measurement readings, units, and status indicators.
- Function Buttons: Buttons like DC V, AC V, DC I, AC I, Ω (Ohms), Freq (Frequency) select the primary measurement function.
- Range Buttons: Used to manually select measurement ranges or enable auto-ranging.
- Setup Buttons (S1-S6): Allow saving and recalling up to six instrument configurations for frequently performed measurements.
- Utility Buttons: Include MIN/MAX, REL (Relative), HOLD, RATE/TRIG, PRINT/BAUD, and SHIFT for advanced functions.
Basic Measurements
Measuring DC Voltage (DC V)
- Connect the red test lead to the HI input terminal and the black test lead to the LO input terminal.
- Press the DC V button.
- Connect the test leads across the circuit or component to be measured.
- The DC voltage reading will appear on the display.
Measuring Resistance (Ω)
- Ensure the circuit is de-energized before measuring resistance.
- For 2-wire measurement: Connect the red test lead to the HI input terminal and the black test lead to the LO input terminal.
- For 4-wire measurement (recommended for precision): Connect the HI test lead to the HI input, LO test lead to the LO input, HI sense lead to SENSE HI, and LO sense lead to SENSE LO.
- Press the Ω button.
- Connect the test leads across the component.
- The resistance reading will appear on the display.
Using Setup Buttons (S1-S6)
The six setup buttons allow for quick recall of frequently used measurement configurations.
- To Save a Setup: Configure the multimeter for the desired measurement function, range, limits, etc. Then, press the SHIFT button followed by one of the S1 to S6 buttons. The current configuration is saved to that button.
- To Recall a Setup: Simply press the desired S1 to S6 button. The multimeter will instantly switch to the saved configuration.
Maintenance
Cleaning
Clean the instrument case with a damp cloth and mild detergent. Do not use abrasives or solvents. Ensure the instrument is powered off and disconnected from all power sources before cleaning.
Calibration
For optimal performance and accuracy, the Fluke 8808A should be calibrated periodically by qualified personnel using traceable standards. Refer to the service manual for detailed calibration procedures or contact Fluke service centers.
Fuse Replacement
If the current measurement function fails, the fuse may need replacement. Refer to the service manual for fuse specifications and replacement instructions. Always replace fuses with the exact type and rating specified by the manufacturer.
Troubleshooting
This section provides solutions to common issues. If the problem persists, contact Fluke technical support.
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| No display or power | Power cord not connected; Power outlet faulty; Internal fuse blown. | Check power cord connection; Test power outlet; Check and replace internal fuse (refer to Maintenance). |
| Incorrect readings | Incorrect function selected; Test leads faulty; Calibration required; Environmental factors. | Verify selected function; Check test leads for continuity; Perform calibration; Ensure stable operating environment. |
| Current measurement not working | Blown current fuse. | Replace the appropriate current fuse (refer to Maintenance). |
| Setup buttons not saving/recalling | Incorrect procedure for saving/recalling. | Ensure SHIFT is pressed before S1-S6 to save, and only S1-S6 to recall. |
