Operating the Camera

1. Power On/Off and Shutter Release

The D7000 has a super-fast power-up time, allowing it to be ready for shooting almost instantly. The split-second shutter release lag (approx. 0.052-second) ensures you capture fleeting moments without delay.

2. Image Quality and Sensor

Equipped with a 16.2 effective megapixel DX-format CMOS image sensor and the EXPEED 2 image processing engine, the D7000 produces images rich in tone and detail. It supports 14-bit A/D conversion for superior image integrity.

3. ISO Sensitivity

The camera offers a wide ISO range from 100 to 6400, expandable to 25,600. This allows for shooting in various lighting conditions, from bright daylight to low-lit evenings, with minimized color noise.

4. Autofocus System

The D7000 features a powerful 39-point AF system with nine cross-type sensors, covering a wide area of the frame for flexible compositional possibilities. It includes 3D tracking for continuously following moving subjects and Auto-area AF for automatic subject detection.

5. Continuous Shooting

Capture fast-paced action with continuous shooting at approximately 6 frames per second (fps) for up to 100 shots, ensuring you don't miss critical moments.

6. D-Movie (Video Recording)

Record Full HD 1080p videos with full-time autofocus and manual exposure control. The camera also supports high-quality stereo sound recording via an external microphone jack. The video below provides an overview of the Nikon D7000's capabilities.

Nikon's exclusive Active D-Lighting preserves details in both highlights and shadowy areas, even in high-contrast scenes. The EXPEED 2 engine renders scenes with smoother tones, and the camera can automatically adjust or bracket settings.

9. White Balance

The intelligent Auto White Balance (AWB) algorithm ensures accurate white rendition under various light sources, including challenging mercury vapor lighting. An additional AWB mode maintains incandescent warmth in images.

10. Picture Control

Customize the look of your images by selecting from various Picture Control settings: Standard, Neutral, Vivid, Monochrome, Landscape, and Portrait. You can also adjust parameters like sharpness and saturation and save them as Custom Picture Controls.

11. Viewfinder

The viewfinder offers approximately 100% frame coverage, ensuring that what you see is precisely what is captured. The bright image and precision-crafted screen aid in confirming focus.

12. Shutter Unit

The D7000's durable shutter unit is tested for 150,000 cycles, offering a shutter speed range of 1/8000 to 30 seconds and a top flash synchronization speed of 1/250 second.

13. Controls and Dials

Controls are strategically placed for streamlined operation. The exposure mode dial and release mode dial are stacked for easy access. A quiet shutter release mode is available for near-silent operation, and one-touch Live View and movie recording are simplified.

14. Electronic Virtual Horizon

Especially useful for landscape photography, the virtual horizon displayed on the LCD helps you ensure the camera is level. This feature can also be used during Live View shooting.

15. Nikon Creative Lighting System (CLS)

The built-in pop-up flash covers a 16mm lens perspective and is fully compatible with Nikon's CLS. It delivers well-balanced i-TTL flash exposures and offers Commander mode for triggering remote flash units using Advanced Wireless Lighting.

16. Power Management

Nikon engineers designed the D7000 for maximum performance with minimized power usage. With the EN-EL15 battery, you can capture approximately 1,050 frames on a single charge.

17. Optional Accessories

The dedicated Multi-Power Battery Pack MB-D11 (sold separately) extends battery life, allowing for over 2,010 shots. It also features a shutter release button, command dials, and a multi-selector for vertical composition and improved camera balance with long telephoto lenses.

18. ViewNX 2 Software

The included ViewNX 2 software is an all-in-one imaging toolbox for browsing, organizing, editing, storing, and sharing photos and movies. It offers features like resizing, cropping, rotating, straightening, and red-eye correction.

Maintenance

To ensure the longevity and optimal performance of your Nikon D7000, follow these general maintenance guidelines:

  • Cleaning: Regularly clean the camera body with a soft, dry cloth. For the lens, use a lens brush or blower to remove dust, followed by a lens cleaning solution and a microfiber cloth. Avoid touching the sensor directly.
  • Dust and Moisture: The D7000 features durable sealing against moisture and dust. However, it is not waterproof. Avoid exposing the camera to heavy rain, sand, or excessive humidity.
  • Storage: When not in use, store the camera in a dry, cool place, ideally in a camera bag with desiccant packets to prevent mold and mildew. Remove the battery if storing for extended periods.
  • Lens Care: Always keep lens caps on when the lens is not in use. Avoid sudden temperature changes that can cause condensation.
