4. Setup
Follow these steps to properly attach the fish-eye lens to your Sony DCR-HC23 camcorder:
- Identify Camera Thread Size: Determine the filter thread size of your camcorder's existing lens. The Sony DCR-HC23 typically has a 25mm filter thread.
- Attach Stepping Ring (if necessary): The 0.21x Fish-Eye Lens has a 37mm thread. If your camcorder's lens has a 25mm thread, first screw the provided 25mm-37mm stepping ring onto your camcorder's lens. Turn clockwise until secure, but do not overtighten.
- Attach Fish-Eye Lens: Carefully align the threads of the 0.21x Fish-Eye Lens with the threads of the stepping ring (or directly to your camcorder's lens if it has a 37mm thread). Screw the fish-eye lens onto the stepping ring (or camcorder lens) in a clockwise direction until it is firmly attached. Ensure it is level and not cross-threaded.
- Remove Lens Caps: Remove the front and rear lens caps from the fish-eye lens before use.
Note: Always handle the lens by its metal casing and avoid touching the glass elements to prevent fingerprints and smudges.
5. Operating the Lens
Once attached, the 0.21x Fish-Eye Lens will dramatically alter the field of view of your camcorder. Here are some operational considerations:
- Wide Angle Effect: The lens provides a 180° diagonal angle of view, creating a strong visual distortion intended to make straight lines appear curved, especially at the edges of the frame. This is characteristic of a fish-eye lens.
- Focus: Most fish-eye lenses have a very deep depth of field, meaning a large range of distances will appear in focus. Your camcorder's autofocus system should adapt, but manual focus may be used for specific creative effects.
- Vignetting: Depending on your camcorder's zoom setting and sensor size, you may observe some vignetting (darkening) at the corners of the image, especially at the widest zoom setting. This is normal for extreme wide-angle adapters.
- Creative Use: Experiment with close-up shots to exaggerate perspective, or use it for landscapes and architectural photography to capture a vast scene with a unique, distorted perspective.

6. Maintenance
Proper care and maintenance will extend the life of your lens and ensure continued high-quality performance.
- Cleaning the Lens:
- Use a blower brush to remove dust and loose particles from the lens surface.
- Gently wipe the lens with the provided Nwv Direct Micro Fiber Cleaning Cloth. For stubborn smudges, a small amount of lens cleaning solution applied to the cloth (not directly to the lens) may be used.
- Do not use abrasive materials or harsh chemicals.
- Storage: When not in use, always attach the front and rear lens caps and store the lens in its protective pouch. Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures.
- Handling: Avoid dropping the lens or subjecting it to strong impacts, as this can damage the optical elements or casing.
7. Troubleshooting
If you encounter issues with your fish-eye lens, consider the following common solutions:
- Blurred Images:
- Ensure the lens is securely attached and not cross-threaded.
- Check if the lens surfaces are clean and free of smudges or dust.
- Verify your camcorder's focus settings.
- Dark Corners (Vignetting):
- This is a common characteristic of extreme wide-angle lenses, especially when used with certain camera sensors or at the widest zoom settings. Try slightly zooming in with your camcorder if possible to reduce the effect.
- Lens Not Attaching:
- Confirm the correct stepping ring (25mm-37mm) is being used and that your camcorder's lens thread size matches the stepping ring's smaller diameter.
- Ensure threads are clean and free of debris.
