Introduction
This manual provides detailed instructions for the proper use and maintenance of your Sony Alpha NEX-5K/S Digital Camera. Please read this manual thoroughly before operating the camera and retain it for future reference.

1. Setup
1.1 Package Contents
Verify that your package contains the following items:
- Sony Alpha NEX-5K/S Digital Camera Body
- 18-55mm Standard Zoom Lens
- Flash and flash case
- NP-FW50 rechargeable battery
- AC-UB10 AC adaptor
- Shoulder strap
- Body cap
- Micro USB cable
- CD-ROM (software/manuals)
1.2 Charging the Battery
Insert the NP-FW50 battery into the AC-UB10 AC adaptor and connect it to a power outlet using the Micro USB cable. The charging indicator will illuminate during charging and turn off when complete.
1.3 Inserting the Battery and Memory Card
Open the battery/memory card cover on the bottom of the camera. Insert the charged battery with the arrow facing inward until it clicks into place. Insert a compatible SD/SDHC/SDXC or Memory Stick Pro Duo/Pro-HG Duo card with the label facing the front of the camera until it clicks.
1.4 Attaching the Lens
Align the white index mark on the lens with the white index mark on the camera body. Rotate the lens clockwise until it clicks into place. To detach, press the lens release button and rotate the lens counter-clockwise.
1.5 Initial Settings
Upon first power-on, the camera will prompt you to set the language, date, time, and time zone. Follow the on-screen instructions using the control wheel and soft keys.
2. Operating the Camera
2.1 Camera Controls Overview

- Power Switch: Located on the top right.
- Shutter Button: Located on the top right.

2.2 Shooting Modes
The NEX-5K/S offers various shooting modes accessible via the menu system and control wheel:
- Intelligent Auto: Camera automatically detects the scene and applies optimal settings.
- Program Auto (P): Camera sets exposure, user can adjust other settings.
- Aperture Priority (A): User sets aperture, camera sets shutter speed.
- Shutter Priority (S): User sets shutter speed, camera sets aperture.
- Manual (M): User controls both aperture and shutter speed.
- Scene Selection: Pre-set modes for specific scenes (e.g., Portrait, Landscape, Macro).
- Sweep Panorama: Captures a series of images and stitches them into a single panoramic photo.
- Handheld Twilight: Combines multiple exposures to reduce noise in low-light conditions without a tripod.
- Anti Motion Blur: Reduces blur in moving subjects by combining multiple exposures.
2.3 Focusing
The camera supports various autofocus modes and manual focus:
- Autofocus (AF):
- Single-shot AF (AF-S): Focuses when the shutter button is pressed halfway.
- Continuous AF (AF-C): Continuously adjusts focus on moving subjects.
- Automatic AF (AF-A): Camera automatically switches between AF-S and AF-C.
- Manual Focus (MF): Allows precise manual adjustment of focus.
2.4 Video Recording
To record video, press the dedicated Movie button. The camera records Full HD 1080/60i video. During recording, the camera smoothly adjusts focus and exposure. Exposure compensation can be adjusted using the control wheel.
2.5 Playback
Press the Playback button to view captured images and videos. Use the control wheel to navigate through files. Press the center of the control wheel to zoom in on images or play videos.
3. Maintenance
3.1 Cleaning the Camera and Lens
- Camera Body: Wipe with a soft, dry cloth. For stubborn dirt, use a cloth lightly dampened with water.
- Lens: Use a lens blower to remove dust. For smudges, use a lens cleaning solution and a microfiber cloth. Avoid touching the lens surface directly.
- Image Sensor: If dust appears on images, consult a professional service center for sensor cleaning.
3.2 Battery Care
- Store batteries in a cool, dry place when not in use.
- Avoid fully discharging the battery frequently to prolong its lifespan.
- Do not expose batteries to extreme temperatures.
3.3 Storage
When storing the camera for extended periods, remove the battery and memory card. Store the camera in a dry, well-ventilated area, preferably with a desiccant to prevent mold and mildew.
