3.2. Side Firebox Conversion

To use the 2-2424 as a side firebox, it must be attached to a compatible Char-Griller barrel grill. This conversion is generally permanent. The process involves removing a pre-punched section on the side of the main grill and attaching the side firebox.

  • Locate the designated punch-out area on your main Char-Griller barrel grill.
  • Carefully remove the punch-out. Some models may require significant effort, potentially involving drilling or cutting if the punch-out is welded rather than bolted. Exercise caution and use appropriate safety gear.
  • Align the side firebox with the opening on the main grill.
  • Securely bolt the side firebox to the main grill using the provided hardware. Ensure a tight seal to minimize smoke leakage.
  • Install the ash pan and cast iron grates within the side firebox.

4. Operation

4.1. Lighting the Charcoal

  1. Open the lid and the air vents.
  2. Place charcoal in the ash pan or directly on the charcoal grate.
  3. Use a charcoal chimney starter or lighter fluid (follow fluid instructions) to ignite the charcoal.
  4. Once the charcoal is covered in a light gray ash, spread it evenly.

4.2. Grilling

  1. Place food directly on the cast iron cooking grates over the hot charcoal.
  2. Adjust the air vents to control the cooking temperature. Opening vents increases airflow and heat; closing them reduces it.
  3. Use the lid to retain heat and smoke for even cooking.

4.3. Smoking (using as a Side Firebox)

When used as a side firebox, the 2-2424 provides an offset heat source for indirect cooking and smoking in your main barrel grill.

  1. Place charcoal and wood chips/chunks in the side firebox.
  2. Ignite the fuel and allow it to reach the desired temperature.
  3. Adjust the air vents on both the side firebox and the main grill to maintain consistent temperature and smoke flow.
  4. Place food in the main barrel grill for indirect smoking.

5. Maintenance

5.1. Cleaning the Ash Pan

The sliding ash pan allows for easy removal of ash. Regularly empty the ash pan to prevent buildup and maintain proper airflow.

5.2. Seasoning Cast Iron Grates

Before first use and periodically thereafter, season the cast iron grates to prevent rust and create a non-stick surface. Apply a thin layer of cooking oil to the grates and heat the grill for about an hour.

5.3. General Cleaning and Storage

  • After each use, brush off food residue from the grates.
  • Wipe down exterior surfaces with a damp cloth.
  • Store the grill in a dry, covered area to protect it from the elements. Using a grill cover is recommended.
