Setup

  1. Select a challenge from the Challenge Booklet. The challenges are organized by difficulty, from Beginner to Expert.
  2. Place the specified chess pieces on the game board exactly as shown in the selected challenge diagram. Ensure the pieces are placed on the correct squares.
  3. The goal is to capture all but one piece on the board.

How to Play

The rules for moving and capturing pieces in Solitaire Chess are the same as in traditional chess. However, there are two key differences:

  • Every move must result in a capture. You cannot move a piece without capturing an opponent's piece.
  • The game ends when only one piece remains on the board. This remaining piece is the one you win with.

Familiarize yourself with standard chess piece movements:

  • King: Moves one square in any direction (horizontally, vertically, or diagonally).
  • Queen: Moves any number of vacant squares in any direction (horizontally, vertically, or diagonally).
  • Bishop: Moves any number of vacant squares diagonally.
  • Knight: Moves in an 'L' shape (two squares in one direction, then one square perpendicularly). Knights can jump over other pieces.
  • Rook: Moves any number of vacant squares horizontally or vertically.
  • Pawn: Moves one square diagonally forward to capture.

Plan your moves carefully to ensure you can continue capturing pieces until only a single piece is left.

Challenges

The Challenge Booklet contains 60 unique puzzles, categorized into different difficulty levels: Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced, and Expert. Start with the Beginner challenges to understand the game mechanics and gradually progress to more complex puzzles as your skills improve.

Each challenge presents a unique starting configuration of chess pieces, and your task is to find the sequence of captures that leaves only one piece.
