1. Introduction

The AJA GEN10 HD/SD Sync Generator is a professional tool designed for video and film production environments. It provides reliable and flexible synchronization options for various video and audio sources. This manual provides essential information for the proper setup, operation, and maintenance of your GEN10 device.

2. Key Features

  • HD Tri-level sync generation for a wide range of HD formats.
  • SD Color Black or Color Bars output options.
  • Two independently switchable output groups for simultaneous HD and SD sync generation.
  • AES-11 output switchable between SILENCE and TONE.
  • Seven total outputs for comprehensive synchronization.
  • All outputs are perfectly in sync, sourced from an accurate master time base.

3. Setup

3.1. Package Contents

Verify that the following items are included with your AJA GEN10:

  • AJA GEN10 HD/SD Sync Generator unit
  • AC power adapter
  • This instruction manual

3.2. Physical Connections

Refer to the diagrams below for proper connection of the GEN10 unit.

AJA GEN10 HD/SD Sync Generator Side View with labeled ports

Figure 1: GEN10 Side View. This image shows the physical layout of the AJA GEN10, including the power input (+5 to 18VDC), AES 11 Output, 2nd Output Group (Outputs 5 & 6), and 1st Output Group (Outputs 1-4). The Power LED is also visible, indicating power status when green.

  1. Power Connection: Connect the provided AC power adapter to the "+5 to 18VDC Power Input" port on the side of the GEN10 unit. The Power LED will illuminate green when the device is powered on.
  2. Output Connections:
    • 1st Output Group (Outputs 1-4): These four outputs are grouped together and can be configured for either HD Tri-level sync or SD Color Bars/Black.
    • 2nd Output Group (Outputs 5-6): These two outputs form a second independent group, also configurable for HD Tri-level sync or SD Color Bars/Black.
    • AES 11 Output: This dedicated output provides AES-11 audio synchronization.
Connect your video and audio equipment requiring synchronization to the appropriate BNC connectors.

3.3. Configuration (DIP Switches)

The GEN10's output groups are configured using DIP switches located on the opposite side of the unit from the labeled ports. Consult the detailed specifications or a separate configuration guide for specific DIP switch settings to select between SD and HD modes, and to choose specific formats within those modes.

AJA GEN10 Block Diagram showing signal flow and output groups

Figure 2: GEN10 Block Diagram. This diagram illustrates the internal signal flow, showing the Master Timebase feeding the SD Sync Generator, HD Sync Generator, and AES Generator. It details how outputs are grouped and selectable for HD Tri-level (720 or 1080) or SD (75% Color Bars or Blackburst PAL or NTSC), and the AES 11 Output.

4. Operating Instructions

Once the GEN10 is powered and configured via its DIP switches, it operates continuously to provide stable synchronization signals.

  1. Power On: Ensure the power adapter is securely connected. The green Power LED indicates the unit is operational.
  2. Output Selection (SD/HD): The selection between SD and HD sync generation for each output group is determined by the DIP switch settings. Refer to the configuration guide for your desired format.
  3. SD Output Modes: When an output group is set to SD, you can typically switch between Color Black or Color Bars. This selection is also made via DIP switches.
  4. HD Tri-level Sync Formats: For HD outputs, the GEN10 supports 19 different HD formats. The specific format is selected through the DIP switches. Ensure your receiving equipment is compatible with the selected format.
  5. AES-11 Output: The AES-11 output can be switched between SILENCE and TONE modes, providing flexibility for audio synchronization. This setting is also controlled by DIP switches.

All outputs from the GEN10 are precisely synchronized from a master time base, ensuring consistent and reliable timing across all connected devices.

5. Maintenance

The AJA GEN10 is designed for reliable, long-term operation with minimal maintenance.

  • Cleaning: Keep the unit clean and free from dust. Use a soft, dry cloth for cleaning. Avoid liquid cleaners or solvents.
  • Ventilation: Ensure adequate airflow around the unit to prevent overheating. Do not block ventilation holes.
  • Storage: When not in use for extended periods, store the GEN10 in a cool, dry environment, protected from extreme temperatures and humidity.
  • Cable Integrity: Periodically check all connected cables for wear or damage. Replace any compromised cables to ensure optimal performance.

6. Troubleshooting

If you encounter issues with your AJA GEN10, consider the following troubleshooting steps:

  • No Power:
    • Verify the power adapter is securely connected to both the GEN10 and a working power outlet.
    • Check if the Power LED on the GEN10 is illuminated green. If not, try a different power outlet or adapter if available.
  • No Sync Output:
    • Ensure all BNC cables are securely connected to the correct output ports on the GEN10 and input ports on your receiving equipment.
    • Verify the DIP switch settings for the affected output group. Confirm it is configured for the correct SD or HD format.
    • Check the input settings on your receiving equipment to ensure it is expecting the type of sync signal being generated by the GEN10.
  • Incorrect Sync Format:
    • Double-check the DIP switch settings against the GEN10's configuration guide to ensure the desired HD tri-level format or SD mode (Color Black/Color Bars) is selected.
  • Intermittent Sync:
    • Inspect all cables for damage or loose connections.
    • Ensure the GEN10 is placed in an environment with stable power and no excessive electromagnetic interference.

If problems persist after attempting these steps, please contact AJA Technical Support for further assistance.
