Honeywell AURORA

Honeywell AURORA PIR Motion Sensor

Model: AURORA

1. Introduction

The Honeywell AURORA PIR Motion Sensor is designed to provide reliable and accurate motion detection for security systems. Utilizing advanced Split-Zone Optics and ASIC-based processing, this sensor offers enhanced detection capabilities while being immune to pets weighing up to 40 lbs. Its ultra-low current consumption and silent relay operation make it an efficient and discreet component for your security setup.

2. Safety Information

  • Read all instructions carefully before installation and operation.
  • Ensure power is disconnected from the alarm system before performing any wiring or installation procedures.
  • Installation should be performed by qualified personnel or under the supervision of a professional to prevent damage or improper function.
  • Do not expose the sensor to extreme temperatures, high humidity, or direct water contact.
  • This device is designed for indoor use unless otherwise specified for outdoor applications.

5. Setup and Installation

5.1 Mounting Location

  • Choose a location that provides optimal coverage (35 ft. x 45 ft. / 10.6m x 13.7m) for the area you wish to protect.
  • Mount the sensor on a solid wall, away from direct sunlight, heating/cooling vents, or objects that may cause rapid temperature changes, which can lead to false alarms.
  • Ensure the sensor is mounted at the recommended height for proper pet immunity (up to 40 lbs.). Refer to your alarm system's general guidelines for motion sensor placement.

5.2 Physical Installation

  1. Carefully remove the front cover of the sensor. This may require a small screwdriver.
  2. Detach the circuit board from the base of the unit.
  3. Use the base as a template to mark the mounting screw locations on the wall.
  4. Drill pilot holes if necessary and insert wall anchors.
  5. Secure the sensor base to the wall using the provided screws.
  6. Reinstall the circuit board into the base, ensuring it is aligned correctly for the desired angle of view.

5.3 Wiring

The AURORA sensor is a corded electric device and requires connection to your alarm control panel. It does not use batteries for primary power.

  • Identify the power (positive and negative) and alarm zone terminals on your alarm control panel.
  • Connect the sensor's power terminals to the appropriate power output from your control panel.
  • Connect the sensor's alarm output terminals to an available zone input on your control panel.
  • Note on Resistors: Some alarm systems require an End-Of-Line (EOL) resistor for zone supervision. If your system requires this, connect the appropriate resistor (e.g., 5.6 kOhm or 2.7 kOhm, depending on your system's specifications and number of sensors) across the alarm zone terminals at the sensor. Consult your alarm panel's manual for specific resistor values.
  • Ensure all wiring connections are secure and properly insulated.

6. Operating Instructions

Once properly installed and powered, the Honeywell AURORA PIR Motion Sensor will begin detecting motion within its coverage area. The sensor operates with a totally silent relay, meaning there is no audible click when motion is detected.

  • Detection: The sensor uses passive infrared (PIR) technology to detect changes in infrared radiation caused by movement of warm bodies.
  • LED Indicator: A red LED light on the sensor typically illuminates briefly when motion is detected. This LED is primarily for testing and can often be disabled after installation to make the sensor less conspicuous.
  • Pet Immunity: The Split-Zone Optics technology allows the sensor to differentiate between humans and pets up to 40 lbs., minimizing false alarms caused by household animals.

7. Maintenance

  • Cleaning: Periodically clean the sensor's lens with a soft, dry cloth to ensure optimal performance. Do not use abrasive cleaners or solvents.
  • Inspection: Regularly check the sensor for any signs of physical damage or loose wiring.
  • Testing: Test the sensor periodically (e.g., monthly) by walking through its detection area while the alarm system is armed (or in test mode) to confirm proper operation.

8. Troubleshooting

  • Sensor Not Tripping / No Detection:
    • Check all wiring connections to ensure they are secure and correct.
    • Verify that the sensor is receiving power from the control panel.
    • Ensure the detection area is clear of obstructions.
    • Confirm that any required EOL resistors are correctly installed and of the proper value for your alarm system.
    • Adjust the sensor's position or angle to optimize coverage.
  • False Alarms:
    • Check for sources of rapid temperature changes within the detection area (e.g., heating/cooling vents, direct sunlight, drafts from windows/doors).
    • Ensure no pets exceeding 40 lbs. are entering the detection zone.
    • Verify that the sensor lens is clean and free from dust or debris.
    • Check for moving objects like curtains, balloons, or plants that might be swaying in drafts.
    • Ensure the sensor is securely mounted and not vibrating.
