Important Safeguards
When using electrical appliances, basic safety precautions should always be followed to reduce the risk of fire, electric shock, and/or injury to persons, including the following:
- Read all instructions.

- To protect against electrical shock, do not immerse cord, plug, or heating base in water or other liquid.
- Close supervision is necessary when any appliance is used by or near children.
- Unplug from outlet when not in use and before cleaning. Allow to cool before putting on or taking off parts.
- Do not operate any appliance with a damaged cord or plug, or after the appliance malfunctions or has been dropped or damaged in any manner. Contact customer service for examination, repair, or adjustment.
- The use of accessory attachments not recommended by the appliance manufacturer may cause injuries.
- Do not use outdoors.
- Do not let cord hang over edge of table or counter, or touch hot surfaces.
- Do not place on or near a hot gas or electric burner, or in a heated oven.
- Extreme caution must be used when moving an appliance containing hot oil or other hot liquids.

Parts and Features

Figure 1: The Hamilton Beach 33167 6 Quart Slow Cooker, showing the main unit with its removable stoneware crock and glass lid.
- Heating Base: The main unit that houses the heating element and control knob.
- Stoneware Crock: A removable, oval-shaped ceramic pot designed for slow cooking. It has a 6-quart capacity and is dishwasher safe.
- Glass Lid: A reinforced glass lid that helps seal in moisture and allows for viewing of food during cooking.
- Latch Straps: Secure the lid to the heating base, making the slow cooker portable for transport.
- Control Knob: Used to select cooking settings (OFF, WARM, LOW, HIGH).
Setup
- Unpack: Carefully remove all packaging materials and labels from the slow cooker.
- Initial Cleaning: Before first use, wash the stoneware crock and glass lid in warm, soapy water. Rinse thoroughly and dry. Wipe the exterior of the heating base with a damp cloth. Do not immerse the heating base in water.
- Placement: Place the heating base on a dry, level, heat-resistant surface, away from walls or cabinets to allow for proper ventilation.
- Assemble: Place the clean stoneware crock into the heating base. Position the glass lid on top of the stoneware crock.
Operating Instructions
- Prepare Food: Place all ingredients into the stoneware crock. Ensure the crock is not overfilled; leave at least 1 inch (2.5 cm) of space from the rim.
- Position Lid: Place the glass lid securely on the stoneware crock.
- Select Setting: Plug the slow cooker into a standard electrical outlet. Turn the control knob to your desired cooking setting:
- LOW: For slow, gentle cooking over a longer period. Ideal for tenderizing meats and developing flavors.
- HIGH: For faster cooking. Use when you have less time or for recipes that require a quicker start.
- WARM: Maintains food at a safe serving temperature after cooking is complete. Do not use the WARM setting for cooking food.
- Cooking Time: Follow your recipe's recommended cooking times. Avoid lifting the lid frequently, as this releases heat and moisture, extending cooking time.
- Transport (Optional): If transporting the slow cooker, ensure the lid is securely fastened using the latch straps. Always carry the slow cooker by its handles.
- Finish Cooking: Once cooking is complete, turn the control knob to OFF and unplug the appliance.
Care and Cleaning
Proper cleaning ensures the longevity and safe operation of your slow cooker.
- Always unplug the slow cooker and allow it to cool completely before cleaning.
- Stoneware Crock: The removable stoneware crock is dishwasher safe. Alternatively, wash it by hand with warm, soapy water. For stubborn food residue, soak the crock in warm water before cleaning. Avoid abrasive cleaners or scouring pads that could damage the surface.
- Glass Lid: The reinforced glass lid is also dishwasher safe. Hand wash with warm, soapy water if preferred.
- Heating Base: Wipe the exterior of the heating base with a soft, damp cloth. Do not immerse the heating base in water or any other liquid. Do not use abrasive cleaners or harsh chemicals on the heating base.
- Storage: Store the slow cooker with the lid inverted on the crock to prevent odors and allow air circulation, or store with the lid securely latched.
Troubleshooting
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Slow cooker does not turn on. | Not plugged in; power outlet not functioning; control knob not set. | Ensure the unit is securely plugged into a working electrical outlet. Check the circuit breaker. Turn the control knob to LOW, HIGH, or WARM. |
| Food is not cooking properly or is undercooked. | Lid lifted too often; insufficient cooking time; incorrect setting. | Avoid lifting the lid during cooking. Increase cooking time. Ensure the correct setting (LOW or HIGH) is selected for cooking. WARM setting is for holding food, not cooking. |
| Food is overcooked or burned. | Too much cooking time; too high a setting for the recipe. | Reduce cooking time. Use the LOW setting for longer cooking durations. Adjust recipe liquids as needed. |
| Lid does not seal tightly. | Food obstruction; lid or crock damaged. | Ensure no food is preventing the lid from seating properly. Inspect the lid and crock for chips or cracks. Do not use if damaged. |
