StarTech.com Replacement Power Reset LED Wire Kit

Model: BEZELWRKIT

Introduction

This manual provides instructions for the installation, operation, and maintenance of the StarTech.com Replacement Power Reset LED Wire Kit (BEZELWRKIT). This kit is designed to replace worn or non-functional power switches, reset switches, and LED indicators on an ATX PC case front panel, restoring full functionality without requiring a new case.

Product Overview

The BEZELWRKIT is a five-piece assembly consisting of two switches and three LED indicators, each clearly labeled for straightforward identification and installation. The components are designed to connect directly to the corresponding headers on an ATX motherboard.

Kit Components:

  • Power Switch (Power SW): Initiates system power on/off.
  • Reset Switch (Reset SW): Restarts the computer system.
  • Power LED (Power LED): Indicates the system's power status (on/off/sleep).
  • Hard Drive Activity LED (HDD LED): Flashes to indicate hard drive read/write activity.
  • Sleep LED (Sleep LED): Indicates when the system is in a low-power sleep state.

Setup and Installation

Proper installation requires careful handling of internal computer components. Always ensure the computer is powered off and disconnected from the main power supply before beginning installation. It is recommended to discharge any static electricity by touching a grounded metal object.

Required Tools:

  • Phillips head screwdriver (if required to open PC case)
  • Your motherboard's user manual (for header identification)

Installation Steps:

  1. Prepare the PC: Power down your computer completely and unplug the power cord from the wall outlet. Open the PC case.
  2. Locate Front Panel Headers: Refer to your motherboard's user manual to identify the front panel header block. This block typically contains pins for Power SW, Reset SW, Power LED, HDD LED, and sometimes a Sleep LED or Message LED.
  3. Remove Old Wires (if applicable): Carefully disconnect the existing front panel wires from the motherboard headers. Note their positions for reference.
  4. Install New Switches and LEDs:

    • Power Switch (Power SW): Connect the two-pin connector labeled 'POWER SW' to the corresponding pins on your motherboard. Polarity typically does not matter for switches.
    • Reset Switch (Reset SW): Connect the two-pin connector labeled 'RESET SW' to the corresponding pins on your motherboard. Polarity typically does not matter for switches.
    • Power LED (Power LED): Connect the two-pin connector labeled 'POWER LED' to the Power LED pins on your motherboard. Note: LEDs are polarity sensitive. If the LED does not light up after installation, reverse the connector.
    • Hard Drive Activity LED (HDD LED): Connect the two-pin connector labeled 'HDD LED' to the HDD LED pins on your motherboard. Note: LEDs are polarity sensitive. If the LED does not light up, reverse the connector.
    • Sleep LED (Sleep LED): Connect the two-pin connector labeled 'SLEEP LED' to the Sleep LED or Message LED pins on your motherboard. Note: LEDs are polarity sensitive. If the LED does not light up, reverse the connector.

  5. Route Wires: Carefully route the new wires to avoid interference with fans or other moving components inside the case.
  6. Close Case and Test: Close the PC case, reconnect the power cord, and power on the computer to verify that all switches and LEDs are functioning correctly.

Operating Instructions

Once installed, the kit functions identically to the original front panel components of your ATX PC case.

  • Power Switch: Press to turn the computer on or off. A short press typically initiates a soft shutdown, while a long press (usually 4-5 seconds) forces a hard shutdown.
  • Reset Switch: Press to restart the computer. This is typically used when the system becomes unresponsive.
  • Power LED: Illuminates when the computer is powered on. May blink or change color to indicate sleep mode, depending on your motherboard and system configuration.
  • HDD LED: Flashes rapidly when the hard drive or solid-state drive is actively reading or writing data.
  • Sleep LED: Illuminates or blinks when the computer is in a low-power sleep or standby state.

Maintenance

The StarTech.com BEZELWRKIT requires minimal maintenance. Periodically, ensure that the connections to the motherboard headers remain secure and that the wires are not obstructing airflow or moving parts within the PC case. Keep the interior of your PC case clean from dust to prevent overheating and ensure optimal performance of all components.
