Introduction

The Attwood Sahara S1100 Automatic Bilge Pump is designed to reliably remove bilge water from larger recreational boats and yachts. This compact and durable unit integrates the pump, wire seals, strainer, and a mercury-free switch, providing an efficient solution for maintaining a dry bilge. It meets automatic switch pump requirements for vessels 20 feet and over with sleeping accommodations.

Safety Information

  • Always disconnect power before installing, inspecting, or servicing the pump.
  • Ensure all electrical connections are waterproof and properly insulated to prevent corrosion and short circuits.
  • Use appropriate fuse protection as specified (1.5-amp draw, 12-volt system).
  • Mount the pump horizontally only, as indicated in the installation instructions.
  • Verify that the discharge hose is securely connected and free from kinks or obstructions.
  • This pump is designed for pumping water only. Do not use for flammable liquids or chemicals.

Setup and Installation

The Sahara S1100 pump is designed for quick and easy installation, even in tight spaces. It must be mounted horizontally.

Mounting the Pump

  1. Select a flat, horizontal surface in the lowest part of the bilge where water collects.
  2. Ensure the pump is accessible for inspection and maintenance.
  3. Secure the pump using appropriate marine-grade fasteners (not included) through the mounting holes in the base.

Electrical Connections

The pump comes with a 29-inch length of 16-gauge caulked and tinned copper wire for electrical connections.

  • Connect the brown wire to the positive (+) terminal of your 12-volt power source (typically the battery, with an inline fuse).
  • Connect the black wire to the negative (-) terminal of your 12-volt power source.
  • For automatic operation, ensure the mercury-free switch is properly integrated into the wiring circuit.
  • Use marine-grade, waterproof connectors and heat shrink tubing for all connections to prevent corrosion.

Hose Connection

The pump uses a 1-1/8-inch interior diameter hose.

  1. Attach a marine-grade discharge hose to the pump's outlet port.
  2. Secure the hose with a stainless steel hose clamp to prevent leaks.
  3. Route the hose upwards to a through-hull fitting, ensuring a continuous upward slope to prevent backflow.

Operating Instructions

The Attwood Sahara S1100 is an automatic bilge pump, meaning it operates without manual intervention once properly installed.

Automatic Operation

  • The integrated mercury-free switch detects the presence of water in the bilge.
  • When water reaches a predetermined level, the switch activates the pump.
  • The pump will run until the water level drops below the switch's activation point, then it will automatically shut off.

Manual Override (if applicable)

Some installations may include a manual override switch at the helm. Refer to your boat's wiring diagram for details on manual operation.

Maintenance

Regular maintenance ensures optimal performance and longevity of your bilge pump.

  • Inspect Regularly: Periodically check the bilge area for debris, oil, or other contaminants that could clog the pump or strainer.
  • Clean Strainer: The integrated strainer should be cleaned regularly to remove any accumulated debris (leaves, hair, etc.) that could impede water flow. To access the strainer, detach the pump from its base.
  • Check Hoses: Ensure discharge hoses are free of kinks, cracks, or blockages. Verify all hose clamps are secure.
  • Test Operation: Manually test the pump's operation periodically by adding water to the bilge or using the test knob (if present) to ensure the automatic switch is functioning correctly.
  • Electrical Connections: Inspect wiring for signs of corrosion, fraying, or loose connections. Re-seal any compromised connections.
