1. Introduction

This manual provides essential instructions for the safe and efficient operation of your ONKYO FR-N9FX CD/MD Tuner Amplifier. Please read this manual thoroughly before using the unit and retain it for future reference. This system integrates a CD player, MD player, and a tuner amplifier into a compact audio component.

2. Safety Information

WARNING: To reduce the risk of fire or electric shock, do not expose this appliance to rain or moisture. Do not open the cabinet; refer servicing to qualified personnel only.

  • Power Source: Connect the unit only to an AC outlet of the voltage specified on the rear panel.
  • Ventilation: Ensure adequate ventilation. Do not block ventilation openings.

4. Setup

4.1 Unpacking and Placement

Carefully remove the unit from its packaging. Place the unit on a stable, level surface with adequate space around it for ventilation. Avoid placing it in direct sunlight or near heat sources.

4.2 Connecting Speakers

Connect your speakers to the speaker terminals on the rear of the FR-N9FX. Ensure correct polarity (+ to + and - to -) for each speaker. Incorrect polarity can result in poor sound quality.

4.3 Antenna Connection

For FM reception, connect the supplied FM indoor antenna to the FM antenna terminal. For AM reception, connect the supplied AM loop antenna to the AM antenna terminals. Position the antennas for optimal reception.

4.4 Power Connection

After all other connections are made, plug the power cord into the AC inlet on the rear of the unit, then into a wall outlet.

5. Operating Instructions

5.1 Power On/Off

Press the POWER button on the front panel or the remote control to turn the unit on or off.

5.2 Source Selection

Press the FUNCTION or SOURCE button repeatedly on the front panel or remote control to cycle through available sources: CD, MD, FM, AM, and other auxiliary inputs.

5.3 CD Playback

  1. Press the CD button to select the CD function.
  2. Press the OPEN/CLOSE button to open the CD tray.
  3. Place a CD with the label side up into the tray.
  4. Press OPEN/CLOSE again to close the tray.
  5. Press the PLAY button to start playback.
  6. Use SKIP buttons to navigate tracks and PAUSE to temporarily stop playback.

5.4 MD Playback/Recording

  1. Press the MD button to select the MD function.
  2. Insert an MD into the MD slot.
  3. Press the PLAY button to start playback.
  4. To record, select the desired input source (e.g., CD, Tuner, or an external input). Press the REC button to begin recording. Refer to the detailed recording section in the full manual for advanced recording features.

5.5 Tuner Operation

  1. Press the FM or AM button to select the desired band.
  2. Use the TUNING buttons (up/down arrows) to manually tune to a station.
  3. Press and hold the TUNING buttons for automatic scanning.
  4. To store a preset, tune to the desired station, then press MEMORY followed by a preset number button.

5.6 Volume Control

Adjust the volume using the VOLUME knob on the front panel or the VOLUME +/- buttons on the remote control.

6. Maintenance

6.1 Cleaning the Unit

Wipe the exterior of the unit with a soft, dry cloth. For stubborn stains, dampen the cloth with a mild detergent solution and wipe gently, then dry with a clean cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners, alcohol, benzene, or thinners, as these can damage the finish.

6.2 Disc Care

Handle CDs and MDs by their edges. Keep them clean and free from scratches. Store discs in their cases when not in use. Avoid exposing discs to direct sunlight or high temperatures.
