Operating Instructions
Proper technique is crucial for achieving a professional finish with your Wagner sprayer.
Achieving the Best Paint Finish
For optimal results, consider these three factors: distance from the surface, length of passes, and speed of movement.
- Distance: Maintain a consistent distance of 6-8 inches from the surface you are spraying. A good rule of thumb is to place your fingers touching the surface and position the sprayer at the end of your hand.
- Length of Passes: Minimize the number of times you go over a surface. Aim to cover the entire area with full, end-to-end passes rather than short, choppy motions.
- Speed: Spray at a consistent speed. Go slow enough to achieve full coverage, but not so slow that the material begins to run or drip.
Figure 3: Staining Project. A person is shown using the Wagner sprayer to apply stain to a wooden fence, demonstrating its use for outdoor projects.
Figure 4: Material Flow Adjustment. A hand is shown adjusting the material flow regulator on the sprayer's trigger, allowing precise control over the spray volume.
Holding the Gun & Using the Trigger
Hold the sprayer straight onto the surface, maintaining a 90-degree angle. Overlap each pass by at least 30% to ensure even coverage. Release the trigger at the end of every pass to prevent overspray and drips.
For models with a two-stage trigger (Flexio 570, 590, 990), the first stage winds up the turbine and pressurizes the cup, blowing only air. Pull the trigger further to activate the paint spray once the turbine is fully wound up.

Maintenance & Cleaning
Regular cleaning and maintenance will extend the life of your sprayer and ensure consistent performance.
- Immediate Cleaning: After each use, immediately clean the sprayer. Disassemble the gun and rinse all parts thoroughly with the appropriate cleaning solution for your material (water for water-based, mineral spirits for oil-based).
- Nozzle Maintenance: Periodically wipe the tip of the nozzle during use to prevent paint from drying and disrupting the spray pattern.
- Filter Replacement: The sprayer uses replaceable filters to keep particles out of the paint. Check and replace these filters as needed to maintain optimal performance.
- Storage: Ensure all components are completely dry before reassembling and storing the sprayer in a cool, dry place.
Troubleshooting
If you encounter issues with your sprayer, consider the following common solutions:
- No Spray or Weak Spray:
- Check material consistency; it might be too thick.
- Ensure the material cup is securely attached and not empty.
- Clean the nozzle and air cap for clogs.
- Verify filters are clean and not obstructed.
- Inconsistent Spray Pattern:
- Clean the air cap and nozzle.
- Adjust the air cap to the correct position for your application.
- Ensure consistent distance and speed during spraying.
- Paint Runs or Drips:
- You might be spraying too slowly or too close to the surface.
- The material might be too thin.
- Reduce the material flow setting.
