3. Setup and Initial Use

3.1 Power Source

The Casio HS-8VA calculator operates on a dual power system: solar power and a single LR1130 (or equivalent) button cell battery. Under sufficient lighting, the calculator will primarily use solar power. In low light conditions, it will automatically switch to battery power.

3.2 Turning On/Off

  • To turn on the calculator, press the ON/C key.
  • The calculator will automatically turn off after approximately 6 minutes of inactivity to conserve battery power.

4. Operating Instructions

4.1 Basic Calculations

Enter numbers using the numeric keypad. Use the +, -, ×, and ÷ keys for arithmetic operations. Press = to display the result.

  • Example: To calculate 15 + 7: Press 1 5 + 7 = (Result: 22)

4.2 Clear Functions

  • ON/C: Clears the current entry and all calculations. Pressing it once clears the entry, pressing it twice clears everything.
  • CE (Clear Entry): (Note: This model uses ON/C for clear entry functionality)

4.3 Memory Functions

The calculator includes three memory keys:

  • M+: Adds the displayed value to the memory.
  • M-: Subtracts the displayed value from the memory.
  • MRC: Press once to recall the memory value. Press twice to clear the memory.

4.4 Percentage Calculations

Use the % key for percentage calculations.

  • Example: To calculate 10% of 200: Press 2 0 0 × 1 0 % (Result: 20)

4.5 Square Root

Press the key after entering a number to calculate its square root.

  • Example: To calculate the square root of 25: Press 2 5 (Result: 5)

4.6 Sign Change

Use the +/- key to change the sign of the displayed number (positive to negative, or negative to positive).

5. Maintenance and Care

5.1 General Care

  • Keep the calculator dry. Avoid exposure to water or high humidity.
  • Do not expose the calculator to extreme temperatures (hot or cold).

5.2 Battery Replacement

  1. Turn off the calculator.
  2. Locate the battery compartment cover on the back of the unit.
  3. Carefully remove the cover using a small screwdriver if necessary.
  4. Remove the old battery and insert a new LR1130 battery with the positive (+) side facing up.
  5. Replace the battery compartment cover securely.
  6. Dispose of old batteries according to local regulations.
