This manual provides instructions for the proper use, care, and maintenance of your Howard Leight by Honeywell SmartFit Corded Reusable Shooting Earplugs, Model R-01520. These earplugs are designed to offer personalized hearing protection in noisy environments, particularly for shooting activities. The unique Conforming Material Technology uses your body heat to adapt to the size and shape of your ear canal, ensuring a comfortable and effective fit.

Key Features

  • Conforming Material Technology: Adapts to the unique shape of your ear canal using body heat for a customized and comfortable fit.
  • Noise Reduction Rating (NRR): Provides a 25 dB noise reduction rating for effective hearing protection.
  • Reusable Design: Durable and washable for multiple uses.
  • Detachable Cord: Allows for convenient wearing around the neck or removal when not needed.
  • Storage Case: Includes a compact case for hygienic storage and transport.

Setup: Fitting Instructions

Proper fitting is essential for maximum hearing protection. Follow these steps carefully:

  1. While holding the stem, gently pull top of ear up and back as shown. Insert earplug so all three flanges are well inside the ear canal.

  2. While in a noisy environment and with earplugs inserted, cup both hands over ears and release. The earplugs should be blocking enough noise so that covering and releasing hands should not result in a significant difference. If proper fit is not obtained, refer to a quiet location and repeat fitting instructions.

WARNING! Remove earplug slowly with a twisting motion to gradually break the seal. Rapid removal may damage eardrum.

WARNING! Improper fitting will reduce effectiveness and could result in hearing loss or injury.

Operating Instructions

These earplugs are designed for use in environments where harmful noise levels are present. They are ideal for activities such as shooting, construction, or any other noisy setting where hearing protection is required.

Once properly inserted, the earplugs will conform to your ear canal, providing a comfortable and effective seal against noise. The detachable cord allows you to keep the earplugs conveniently around your neck when temporarily removed.

CAUTION: For noise environments dominated by frequencies below 500Hz, the C-weighted environmental noise level should be used. Improper fit of this device will reduce its effectiveness in attenuating noise. Consult the fitting instructions for proper fit. Although hearing protectors can be recommended for protection against the harmful effects of impulsive noise, the Noise Reduction Rating (NRR) is based on the attenuation of continuous noise and may not be an accurate indicator of the protection attainable against impulsive noise such as gunfire. Constant or repetitive exposure to impulsive noise may lead to serious injury. Temporary or permanent deafness. The noise reduction rating (NRR) calculated from the attenuation data is 25dB. Earplugs must be properly fitted to attenuate noise effectively. Refer to instructions.

Maintenance

To ensure longevity and hygiene, clean your earplugs regularly:

  • Reusable earplugs can be cleaned by removing all earwax and contaminants prior to re-insertion.
  • Soiled plugs may be wiped clean with a moist cloth.
  • Do not use solutions, disinfectants, or chemicals, as these may degrade the material or affect performance.

Store the earplugs in the provided storage case when not in use to keep them clean and protected.

Troubleshooting

If you experience reduced noise protection or discomfort, consider the following:

  • Insufficient Noise Reduction: Re-check the fitting instructions. Ensure the earplugs are fully seated in the ear canal and that all three flanges create a seal. The "cup hands over ears" test can help verify proper fit.
  • Discomfort: Ensure the earplugs are inserted gently and not forced. The SmartFit material adapts to your body heat, so allow a few moments for them to conform. If discomfort persists, re-adjust or consult the fitting instructions.
  • Earplugs Falling Out: This often indicates an improper fit. Ensure the ear canal is clean and dry before insertion. Re-insert following the instructions, making sure to pull the ear up and back to straighten the canal.
  • Damaged Earplugs: Inspect earplugs regularly for tears, cracks, or hardening of the material. Damaged earplugs should be replaced immediately to ensure effective protection.

WARNING! Keep away from infants and small children. These earplugs are nontoxic but may interfere with breathing if caught in windpipe, which could cause serious injury or death. The cord attached to earplugs is not a toy. It may interfere with breathing if wrapped around the neck, which could lead to serious injury or death.
