ICM Controls ICM402 Three-Phase Line Voltage Monitor with terminal labels

Figure 1: ICM Controls ICM402 Unit Overview. This image displays the top view of the ICM402 monitor, highlighting its various terminals and labels. Key markings include:

  • Y | Y-OUT (30 AMPS MAX.): Output terminal for the monitored circuit.
  • C | 115 VAC | 230 VAC: Control voltage input terminals.
  • FAULT / ON LEDs: Indicators for operational status and fault conditions.
  • P/N ICM402 cRUus: Part number and safety certification.
  • L1, L2, L3 (190-600 VAC): Three-phase line voltage input terminals.
  • CUT WIRE FOR 50Hz: A red wire loop indicating a modification for 50Hz operation (if applicable).
  • MADE IN THE USA: Country of manufacture.

The warning "SHOCK HAZARD: TURN OFF ALL POWER BEFORE SERVICING. ALL TERMINALS MAY BE ENERGIZED." is prominently displayed on the unit itself.

Installation and Setup

Proper installation is crucial for the correct operation and safety of the ICM402. Refer to Figure 1 for terminal identification.

  1. Power Disconnection: Before beginning any wiring, ensure that all power to the circuit where the ICM402 will be installed is completely disconnected and locked out.
  2. Mounting: Mount the ICM402 in a suitable electrical enclosure, ensuring adequate ventilation and protection from environmental factors.
  3. Three-Phase Input Wiring (L1, L2, L3): Connect the three-phase line voltage (190-600 VAC) to the L1, L2, and L3 terminals. Ensure correct phase sequence for proper monitoring of phase reversal.
  4. Control Voltage Wiring (C, 115 VAC, 230 VAC): Connect the appropriate control voltage (115 VAC or 208/240 VAC) to the 'C' terminal and the corresponding voltage terminal (115 VAC or 230 VAC). This powers the internal circuitry of the monitor.
  5. Output Wiring (Y | Y-OUT): Connect the monitored circuit's control input or contactor coil to the Y and Y-OUT terminals. This output is rated for 30 Amps maximum.
  6. Frequency Selection (50Hz/60Hz): The unit is factory set for 60Hz operation. If operating in a 50Hz system, locate the red wire loop labeled "CUT WIRE FOR 50Hz" and carefully cut it. Refer to Figure 1 for its location.
  7. Power Restoration: Once all wiring is securely connected and verified, restore power to the circuit.

Operation

Upon power-up, the ICM402 will begin monitoring the three-phase line voltage. The status of the system is indicated by the two onboard LEDs:

The unit automatically resets once the fault condition is cleared and the voltage returns to normal operating parameters.

Maintenance

The ICM402 is designed for maintenance-free operation. However, periodic visual inspection is recommended to ensure:

Before any inspection or cleaning, always disconnect power to the unit.

Troubleshooting

ProblemPossible CauseSolution
Unit not powering on (no LEDs)No control voltage supply; Incorrect control voltage wiring.Verify control voltage (115, 208/240 VAC) is present and correctly wired to C and appropriate VAC terminal. Check fuses/breakers.
FAULT LED is ON continuouslyPhase loss, phase reversal, or voltage unbalance detected.Check all three phases (L1, L2, L3) for presence and correct voltage. Verify phase sequence. Check for significant voltage unbalance between phases.
Unit cycles between ON and FAULTIntermittent power issue; Borderline voltage unbalance.Monitor incoming power for stability. Consult an electrician to diagnose power quality issues.
Output (Y | Y-OUT) not activatingFAULT condition present; Incorrect wiring to controlled device.Ensure no FAULT LED is illuminated. Verify wiring from Y/Y-OUT to the controlled device. Check the controlled device itself.

If troubleshooting steps do not resolve the issue, contact a qualified electrician or ICM Controls customer support.
