JBL Sub 550P High-Performance 10" Powered Subwoofer Instruction Manual

Brand: JBL | Model: ES250P

1. Introduction

The JBL Sub 550P is a high-performance 10-inch (250mm) powered subwoofer designed to deliver accurate and deep bass for home audio systems. It features a built-in 300W RMS amplifier and a sealed enclosure for optimal sound reproduction. This manual provides essential information for setting up, operating, and maintaining your subwoofer.

2. Key Features

  • 10-inch (250mm) Low-Frequency Transducer: Delivers deep bass impact. The PolyPlas cone material enhances stiffness and damping for tighter, extended bass without distortion. The cast-aluminum frame ensures precise alignment and heat dissipation.
  • Built-in 300W RMS Amplifier: Provides high-power amplification for louder volume with less distortion, resulting in realistic bass while generating less heat.
  • Sealed Enclosure: Designed for optimal bass response and clarity.
  • Forward-firing Transducer: Maximizes bass impact.
  • LFE and Line Level Inputs: Allows proper operation with various receivers and processors.
  • Adjustable Crossover Frequency: Optimizes subwoofer performance to blend seamlessly with your main speakers.
  • Phase Control: Increases installation flexibility for optimal sound integration.
  • Metal Floor Spikes: Included to improve bass impact and reduce unwanted boominess.
  • Auto Turn-on and Turn-off: For convenient use and energy conservation.

4. Setup

4.1 Placement

The placement of your subwoofer significantly impacts its performance. Experiment with different locations to find the best bass response in your listening area. Generally, placing the subwoofer in a corner can enhance bass output, but may also lead to "boominess." Placing it along a wall can provide a more balanced sound. Avoid placing it directly against a wall if possible, to allow for proper air circulation.

4.2 Connecting the Subwoofer

The JBL Sub 550P offers both LFE (Low-Frequency Effects) and line-level inputs for versatile connection options.

  • LFE Input (Recommended): If your A/V receiver has a dedicated subwoofer output (often labeled LFE, SUB OUT, or SUBWOOFER), connect a single RCA cable from this output on your receiver to the LFE input on the subwoofer. This allows your receiver to manage the crossover frequency.
  • Line Level Inputs: If your receiver does not have a dedicated subwoofer output, connect RCA cables from the receiver's front left and right pre-out jacks to the corresponding left and right line-level inputs on the subwoofer. You will then need to adjust the subwoofer's crossover frequency control.

4.3 Power Connection

Once connected to your audio system, plug the subwoofer's power cord into a suitable AC outlet. The subwoofer features an auto turn-on/off function, which will activate the unit when an audio signal is detected and put it into standby mode after a period of inactivity.

5. Operating the Subwoofer

5.1 Volume Control

Adjust the volume knob on the subwoofer to balance its output with your main speakers. Start with a low volume and gradually increase it until the bass blends naturally with the rest of your audio system without overpowering it.

5.2 Crossover Frequency

The crossover frequency control determines the highest frequency the subwoofer will reproduce. If using the LFE input, set this control to its maximum setting, as your receiver will manage the crossover. If using line-level inputs, adjust the crossover to blend smoothly with your main speakers. A good starting point is typically around 80-100 Hz, but this may vary depending on your main speakers' low-frequency capabilities.

5.3 Phase Control

The phase control (0° or 180°) helps ensure the subwoofer's output is in phase with your main speakers, preventing cancellation or reinforcement of bass frequencies. Listen to music with strong bass and switch between 0° and 180°. Choose the setting that provides the most impactful and coherent bass response.

6. Maintenance

To ensure the longevity and optimal performance of your JBL Sub 550P, follow these maintenance guidelines:

  • Cleaning: Use a soft, dry cloth to wipe the cabinet. Avoid using abrasive cleaners, waxes, or solvents.
  • Placement: Keep the subwoofer away from direct sunlight, heat sources, and excessive moisture. Ensure adequate ventilation around the amplifier section.
  • Handling: When moving the subwoofer, lift it carefully to avoid dropping or damaging the enclosure or internal components.
