Sigma 50-150mm f/2.8 EX DC HSM II Zoom Lens Instruction Manual

Model: 691306

Introduction

This manual provides essential instructions for the safe and effective use of your Sigma 50-150mm f/2.8 EX DC HSM II Zoom Lens. Designed exclusively for digital SLR cameras with APS-C size sensors, this telephoto zoom lens offers a constant large aperture of F2.8, making it suitable for various photographic applications, including low-light conditions and creative depth-of-field control. Please read this manual thoroughly before using the lens to ensure optimal performance and longevity.

Safety Information

  • Do not look at the sun or strong light sources through the lens, as this can cause permanent vision damage.
  • Keep the lens away from direct sunlight when not in use to prevent fire hazards from concentrated light.
  • Avoid exposing the lens to extreme temperatures, high humidity, or corrosive chemicals.
  • Handle the lens with care. Dropping or subjecting it to strong impacts can cause internal damage.
  • Keep out of reach of children.

Setup

Attaching the Lens to the Camera

  1. Ensure both the camera and lens are powered off.
  2. Remove the rear lens cap from the lens and the body cap from the camera.
  3. Align the mounting index marks (usually a white dot or line) on the lens with the corresponding mark on the camera body.
  4. Insert the lens into the camera's lens mount and rotate it clockwise (for Nikon F-mount) until it clicks into place. Do not force the lens.
  5. To detach, press the lens release button on the camera body and rotate the lens counter-clockwise until it detaches.

Attaching the Lens Hood

The included lens hood helps to block extraneous light, reducing flare and ghosting. Align the mark on the lens hood with the mark on the front of the lens and rotate it clockwise until it locks securely. For storage, the lens hood can be reversed and attached to the lens.

Operating the Lens

Focusing

  • Autofocus (AF): Set the focus mode switch on the lens (if present) or camera to AF. The Hyper Sonic Motor (HSM) provides quiet and high-speed autofocusing.
  • Manual Focus (MF): Set the focus mode switch to MF. Rotate the focus ring to achieve sharp focus. This lens also features full-time manual focus override, allowing you to fine-tune focus manually even when in AF mode by simply rotating the focusing ring.

Zooming

Rotate the zoom ring to adjust the focal length between 50mm and 150mm. The lens features an inner zooming system, meaning the overall length of the lens does not change during zooming.

Aperture Settings

This lens maintains a constant maximum aperture of F2.8 throughout its entire zoom range. This allows for consistent exposure and depth-of-field control regardless of the focal length selected. The minimum aperture is F22.

Using with Tele-Converters

This lens is compatible with Sigma 1.4x EX DG and 2x EX DG APO Tele-Converters, extending its focal length capabilities. Refer to the tele-converter's instruction manual for proper attachment and usage.

Maintenance

Cleaning the Lens

  • Use a blower brush to remove dust from the lens surface.
  • For smudges or fingerprints, use a clean, soft lens cloth specifically designed for optical surfaces, along with a small amount of lens cleaning fluid. Apply the fluid to the cloth, not directly to the lens.
  • Never use organic solvents like paint thinner or benzene to clean the lens.

Storage

  • When not in use, attach both front and rear lens caps.
  • Store the lens in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and high humidity.
  • If storing for an extended period, consider using a desiccant to prevent mold growth.

Handling Precautions

This lens is a precision optical instrument. Avoid dropping it or subjecting it to strong vibrations or impacts. While robust, severe physical shock can affect its internal components and optical alignment.

Troubleshooting

ProblemPossible CauseSolution
Autofocus not working
  • Focus mode switch set to MF.
  • Lens not properly mounted.
  • Incompatible camera model (e.g., Nikon D3300 may not support AF with this lens).
  • Set focus mode switch to AF.
  • Re-mount the lens securely.
  • Check camera compatibility. Use manual focus if AF is not supported.
Images appear soft or blurry
  • Lens or camera shake.
  • Incorrect focus.
  • Shooting wide open (f/2.8) can sometimes be softer than stopped down.
  • Use a faster shutter speed or tripod.
  • Verify focus point.
  • Try stopping down the aperture to f/4 or f/5.6 for increased sharpness.
Flare or ghosting in images
  • Strong light source hitting the front element.
  • Lens hood not attached or incorrectly positioned.
  • Ensure the lens hood is properly attached.
  • Re-position to avoid direct light sources.

If problems persist after attempting these solutions, please contact Sigma customer support or a qualified service technician.
