5. Installation Instructions (Setup)
This dimmer module is designed for wire-in installation, typically within the base of a touch lamp. Follow these steps carefully:
- Disconnect Power: Unplug the lamp from the wall outlet. If the lamp is hardwired, turn off power at the circuit breaker.
- Access Lamp Base: Carefully open the lamp base to expose the existing wiring and dimmer (if any). Note the current wiring configuration before disconnecting anything.
- Identify Wires: The Westek 6503HBLC dimmer has four wires:
- Black Wire: Hot (Power Input from the wall plug, typically connected to the narrower blade of the AC plug).
- Grey Wire: Neutral (Common connection, typically connected to the wider blade of the AC plug and the neutral wire going to the bulb socket).
- Red Wire: Switched Power Output (Connects to the hot wire leading to the lamp bulb socket(s)).
- Yellow Wire: Touch Sensor (Connects to the metal frame or base of the lamp that you touch to operate the dimmer).
- Remove Old Dimmer (if applicable): Disconnect the wires from the old dimmer, making sure to remember which wire went where.
- Connect New Dimmer: Using appropriate wire nuts (ensure they are sized correctly for your wires), connect the wires of the Westek 6503HBLC as follows:
- Connect the Black wire of the dimmer to the Hot (Live) wire coming from the lamp's power cord.
- Connect the Grey wire of the dimmer to the Neutral wire coming from the lamp's power cord AND the Neutral wire going to the lamp's bulb socket(s). This will be a three-way connection.
- Connect the Red wire of the dimmer to the Hot wire going to the lamp's bulb socket(s).
- Connect the Yellow wire of the dimmer to the metal part of the lamp's base or frame that is intended for touch control. Ensure this connection is secure and makes good contact. If your lamp is powder-coated or non-conductive, you may need to extend this wire to a conductive part or create a discreet touch point.
- Secure Connections: Ensure all wire nuts are tightly secured and connections are insulated. Tuck the dimmer module and wiring neatly into the lamp base, ensuring no wires are pinched.
- Reassemble Lamp: Carefully close the lamp base.
- Test: Plug the lamp back into the wall outlet and test its functionality.

7. Maintenance
- Cleaning: Ensure the lamp is unplugged before cleaning. Wipe the exterior of the lamp and any exposed parts of the dimmer with a dry, soft cloth. Do not use liquid cleaners or abrasive materials.
- Bulb Replacement: Always unplug the lamp before replacing bulbs. Ensure replacement bulbs do not exceed the 300-Watt maximum rating and are compatible with dimmers.
- Connection Check: Periodically check wire connections within the lamp base to ensure they remain secure, especially if the lamp is frequently moved.
8. Troubleshooting
- Lamp does not turn on or dim:
- Check if the lamp is securely plugged into a working outlet.
- Verify the light bulb is functional and correctly screwed in.
- Ensure all wire connections inside the lamp base are secure and correct according to the installation instructions.
- Confirm the yellow touch sensor wire is making good contact with a conductive part of the lamp.
- Ensure the bulb type is incandescent or halogen and does not exceed 300 Watts.
- Dimmer only has one level or flickers:
- This may indicate an incompatible bulb type (e.g., non-dimmable LED/CFL). Replace with a compatible incandescent or halogen bulb.
- Check for loose wiring connections.
- Dimmer stops responding to touch:
- Unplug the lamp for a few minutes, then plug it back in to reset the dimmer.
- Inspect the yellow touch sensor wire connection for corrosion or poor contact.
