2. Setup
2.1 Unpacking and Initial Cleaning
Carefully remove all components from the packaging. Before first use, disassemble the coffee maker and wash all parts with warm soapy water. Rinse thoroughly and dry completely. This removes any manufacturing residues.
2.2 Component Overview
The Alessi 9090/3 consists of three main parts:
- Base (Water Chamber): The bottom part where water is heated. It features a safety valve to prevent over-pressurization.
- Filter Basket: A metal basket that holds the coffee grounds, placed inside the water chamber.
- Upper Chamber (Collection Pot): The top part where brewed espresso collects. It includes the handle, lid, and spout.
Additionally, a reducer filter is provided, allowing you to brew a smaller quantity of espresso if desired.
3. Operating Instructions
3.1 Filling the Water Chamber
Unlatch the upper chamber from the base by pulling the handle upwards. Remove the filter basket. Fill the base with cold water up to the level of the safety valve. Do not overfill. Using distilled water is recommended to prevent mineral buildup and maintain optimal flavor.
3.2 Adding Coffee Grounds
Place the filter basket into the water-filled base. Fill the filter basket with finely ground espresso coffee. Do not tamp the coffee grounds. Level the grounds gently without pressing them down. If brewing a smaller quantity, insert the reducer filter into the basket before adding coffee grounds according to the reducer's instructions.
3.3 Assembling the Coffee Maker
Carefully place the upper chamber onto the base, ensuring it aligns correctly. Push the handle down firmly to engage the lever-lock mechanism, securing the two parts together. This unique design eliminates the need for screwing parts together, reducing the risk of leaks.

3.4 Brewing Espresso
Place the assembled coffee maker on a stovetop burner. For gas stoves, ensure the flame does not extend beyond the base of the coffee maker to protect the handle. For induction cooktops, the magnetic base ensures compatibility. Heat on medium-low heat. The espresso will begin to brew and fill the upper chamber. The lid can be kept open during brewing to observe the process, or closed. Once the upper chamber is full and brewing stops, remove the coffee maker from the heat immediately to prevent over-extraction.
3.5 Serving
The Alessi 9090/3 features a no-drip spout for clean pouring. Serve the freshly brewed espresso into cups. The handle is designed to remain cool enough to touch, but always exercise caution when handling hot appliances.
4. Maintenance
4.1 Cleaning
After each use, allow the coffee maker to cool completely. Disassemble all parts and wash them with warm water and a mild detergent. Rinse thoroughly to remove all coffee residues and soap. The Alessi 9090/3 is dishwasher safe, but hand washing is recommended to preserve its finish and extend its lifespan. Ensure all parts are completely dry before reassembling and storing to prevent water spots or corrosion.
4.2 Descaling
Over time, mineral deposits from water can accumulate, affecting performance and taste. Descale your espresso maker every 1-3 months, depending on water hardness and frequency of use. Use a commercial descaling solution designed for coffee makers, or a mixture of equal parts white vinegar and water. Follow the descaling solution's instructions, or run the vinegar solution through a brewing cycle without coffee grounds. Rinse thoroughly with clean water several times after descaling.
4.3 Storage
Store the clean and dry coffee maker in a cool, dry place. It is advisable to store the parts disassembled or with the lid slightly ajar to allow air circulation and prevent odors.
5. Troubleshooting
- No coffee brewing or very slow flow:
- Ensure the water chamber is filled to the correct level.
- Check that the coffee grounds are not tamped too tightly.
- Verify that the heat source is adequate and consistent.
- Inspect the filter basket and internal components for blockages; clean if necessary.
- Weak or watery coffee:
- Use fresh, finely ground espresso coffee.
- Ensure the filter basket is adequately filled with coffee grounds.
- Check that the coffee maker is removed from heat immediately after brewing is complete to avoid over-extraction.
- Leaking from the seal:
- Ensure the upper chamber is correctly seated and the lever-lock handle is fully engaged.
- Check the rubber gasket for wear or damage. Replace if necessary.
- Verify that no coffee grounds are caught in the sealing area.
