Stanley Bailey G Clamp 150mm / 6in User Manual

Model: 0-83-035

1. Introduction

This manual provides essential information for the safe and effective use of your Stanley Bailey G Clamp. Please read this manual thoroughly before operation and retain it for future reference. The Stanley Bailey G Clamp is a robust workholding device designed for securing materials during various tasks such as gluing, drilling, or assembly.

2. Safety Information

Always observe the following safety precautions when using the G Clamp:

  • Wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), such as safety glasses, to protect against flying debris.
  • Ensure the workpiece is stable and properly supported before applying clamping force.
  • Do not overtighten the clamp. Excessive force can damage the workpiece or the clamp itself.
  • Keep hands and fingers clear of the clamping area to prevent pinching.
  • Inspect the clamp before each use for any signs of damage, wear, or deformation. Do not use a damaged clamp.
  • Use the correct size clamp for the job. This 150mm (6in) clamp is suitable for workpieces within its capacity.
  • Store the clamp in a dry, clean place to prevent corrosion and damage.

3. Product Overview

The Stanley Bailey G Clamp (Model 0-83-035) is engineered for durability and reliable performance. Key components and features include:

  • Frame: Constructed from heavy-duty malleable iron, designed to resist flexing and bending.
  • Screw: Features roll-formed screw threads for smooth operation and enhanced durability.
  • Swivel Pad: A movable pad at the end of the screw that conforms to the workpiece surface, distributing clamping pressure evenly.
  • T-Handle: An oversized T-handle provides extra torque for secure tightening.
  • Finish: High-visibility, corrosion-resistant finish for longevity and easy identification.

4. Setup

The Stanley Bailey G Clamp requires minimal setup before use. It is ready for operation directly out of the packaging.

  1. Unpack the Clamp: Carefully remove the clamp from its packaging.
  2. Inspect for Damage: Before first use, visually inspect the entire clamp for any signs of shipping damage or manufacturing defects. Ensure the screw threads are clean and move freely.
  3. Clean if Necessary: If there is any debris or dust from packaging, wipe the clamp clean with a dry cloth.

5. Operating Instructions

Follow these steps to effectively use your G Clamp:

  1. Prepare Workpiece: Position the materials or workpiece to be clamped on a stable work surface.
  2. Open the Clamp: Rotate the T-handle counter-clockwise to retract the screw and open the clamp jaws sufficiently to fit over your workpiece.
  3. Position the Clamp: Place the fixed jaw of the clamp against one side of the workpiece and the swivel pad against the other. Ensure the clamp is perpendicular to the workpiece for even pressure distribution.
  4. Tighten the Clamp: Rotate the T-handle clockwise to advance the screw and bring the swivel pad into contact with the workpiece. Continue tightening until the workpiece is securely held. Apply firm, but not excessive, pressure. The oversized T-handle allows for good leverage.
  5. Verify Stability: Gently test the workpiece to ensure it is firmly secured and will not shift during your task.
  6. Release the Clamp: Once your task is complete, rotate the T-handle counter-clockwise to loosen the clamp and remove it from the workpiece.

6. Maintenance

Proper maintenance will extend the life and performance of your Stanley Bailey G Clamp:

  • Cleaning: After each use, wipe down the clamp with a clean, dry cloth to remove any dust, debris, or adhesive residue.
  • Lubrication: Periodically apply a light coat of machine oil or grease to the screw threads to ensure smooth operation and prevent rust. Do not over-lubricate.
  • Storage: Store the clamp in a dry environment, away from excessive moisture or corrosive chemicals. Hanging the clamp or storing it in a tool drawer is recommended.
  • Inspection: Regularly inspect the frame for cracks or bends, and the screw threads for wear or damage. Ensure the swivel pad moves freely.

7. Troubleshooting

Common issues and their solutions:

ProblemPossible CauseSolution
Screw is stiff or difficult to turn.Lack of lubrication, dirt/debris in threads, minor rust.Clean threads thoroughly. Apply a light lubricant (e.g., machine oil) to the screw threads.
Clamp does not hold workpiece securely.Insufficient tightening, workpiece too small for clamp, worn swivel pad.Ensure T-handle is tightened firmly. Use a clamp appropriate for the workpiece size. Inspect swivel pad for damage.
Clamp frame appears bent or deformed.Excessive force applied, impact damage.Discontinue use immediately. A bent frame compromises safety and effectiveness. Replace the clamp.
